Former Blades head coach Mitch Love accepts role with Capitals

Former Saskatoon Blades head coach Mitch Love has joined the NHL’s Washington Capitals as an assistant coach.

The Washington Capitals have named Mitch Love as an assistant coach.

Love, who will primarily work with the Capitals' defensemen, will join assistant coach Scott Allen and goaltending coach Scott Murray on head coach Spencer Carbery's staff.#ALLCAPS

The Blades gave Love his first WHL head coaching position in June of 2018. The team went 95-44-12-4 under Love’s guidance over 3 seasons, resulting in a .665 points percentage.

In July of 2021, the Quesnel, BC native made the leap to his first pro head coaching gig, joining the Calgary Wranglers (previously known as the Stockton Heat) for the past two seasons. Love led the club to a 45-16-7 record in his first season, making it all the way to the Western Conference Finals. Love’s team followed it up with an outstanding 51-17-4 record securing 106 points, the most in the AHL that year. Love caught the eyes of everyone in the league during his short stint with the Wranglers, earning back-to-back AHL Coach of the Year awards.
