Career-Blade Charlie Wright signs pro deal with AHL’s Coachella Valley Firebirds
Coachella Valley, CA – Former Saskatoon Blades defenceman Charlie Wright has signed a pro contract with the American Hockey League’s (AHL) Coachella Valley Thunderbirds.
The Olds, AB product played all five WHL seasons with the Blue and Gold. A 256-game veteran, Wright finished his career with 15 goals, 89 assists, 104 points, and a +43 rating. The man known as “Chuck” scored a career-high eight goals, 32 assists, and 40 points in 66 games during his 19-year-old season in 2022-23. Named an alternate captain the following year, Wright went on to score five goals, 30 assists, and 35 points in 68 games during his graduating season.
The 6-foot-1 defender was named the club’s Playoff MVP this past spring. Wright helped the Blades reach their second consecutive Eastern Conference Final appearance, leading all defenceman on the team in points with 14 (5G, 9A). Despite guarding the WHL’s top superstars throughout the playoffs, Wright finished the 2024 postseason +10.
Wright leaves the WHL with 39 career playoff games. The man known as “Chuck” will see a familiar face in Coachella Valley in assistant coach Brennan Sonne. The Maple Ridge, BC native was head coach of the Blades for the last three seasons and joined the Firebirds this past summer as an assistant coach.
