Blades announce “PokeCheck Learns” series for 2024-25 season
Saskatoon, SK – The Saskatoon Blades are happy to bring you the PokeCheck Learns series for 2024-2025 season.
The furriest mascot in the league is inviting all his friends to learn together on three topics that impact both kids and adults.
The first topic is part of Blades goaltender Evan Gardner and rookie forward Zach Olsen’s everyday life, diabetes awareness. Both men were diagnosed with type 1 diabetes when they were kids, and neither have allowed it to hinder getting to the Western Hockey League (WHL) level. Gardner’s took it one step further as he was drafted by the Columbus Blue Jackets in the second round of the 2024 NHL Entry Draft.
Our friends from Stick it to Diabetes will be inside SaskTel Centre Friday, Nov. 29 when the Blades welcome the Lethbridge Hurricanes at 7:00pm. Gardner will wear a custom mask that will be auctioned off throughout December. All proceeds from the auction go directly to Diabetes Camp for Kids in Saskatchewan.
Pokecheck will be learning what diabetes is, what the signs of low sugar in a friend can be, and more!
Second topic will be on Tuesday, Feb. 25 against the Hurricanes ahead of Pink Shirt Day, as PokeCheck will learn anti-bullying.
Our friends at SaskTel are partnering with us to show PokeCheck and his friends why its important to be kind, not allow others to be bullies, and to look out for your teammates, like the Blades!
The third topic takes place on Wednesday, March 5 against the Swift Current Broncos. We’re joining forces with TD to bring out Sensory Awareness Night. This night will highlight the challenges some endure just going to a sporting event, and what we can do as a group to be more accessible, more accepting, and proving that hockey is for everyone!
We’ve created some commemorative lapel pins for this series, and they will be on sale next week in anticipation for Diabetes Awareness Night on Friday, Nov. 29!
