Top players honoured at the MasterCard Memorial Cup
The 2008 MasterCard Memorial Cup awards and all-star team were announced shortly following the conclusion of the championship game on Sunday.
rDustin Tokarski of the Memorial Cup champion Spokane Chiefs won the Stafford Smythe Memorial Trophy as the most valuable player of the tournament as well as the Hap Emms Memorial Trophy as the top goaltender of the tournament. Tokarski posted a 4-0 record with a 1.72 goals against average and .953 save percentage. After allowing four goals in their openg game win over the Belleville Bulls, the 17-year-old from Watson, SK allowed just one goal against in the next three games, including a 53-save performance in the championship game against the Kitchener Rangers on Sunday.
rJustin Azevedo of the Rangers won the Ed Chynoweth Trophy as the tournament’s top scorer with 11 points. The 20-year-old from West Lorne, ON scored four goals and assist in seven others, including a five-point game in the Rangers’ 9-0 semi-final win over the Belleville Bulls on Friday.
rMatt Halischuk of the Rangers won the George Parsons Memorial Trophy as the most sportsmanlike player after finishing second in tournament scoring with five goals and four assists for nine points in five games. The 20-year-old from Mississauga didn’t record a penalty in the tournament.
rTokarski and Azevedo were also named to the tournament all-star team along with forwards Drayson Bowman and Mitch Wahl of the Chiefs and defencemen Justin Falk of the Chiefs and Ben Shutron of the Rangers.
