Team Orr Wins 3 on 3 Challenge
Team Orr defeated Team Cherry 17-14 in the 3 on 3 Challenge on Tuesday night at the Kitchener Memorial Auditorium Complex. The 3 on 3 Challenge is part of the 2003 Home Hardware Canadian Hockey League Top Prospects Game week. The eighth edition of the game that features 40 of the CHL’s top prospects that are eligible for the 2003 National Hockey League Entry Draft will be played at the Kitchener Memorial Auditorium Complex tonight at 7:00 PM. The game will be broadcast on Rogers Sportsnet.
The 3 on 3 Challenge, a new addition to the Home Hardware CHL Top Prospects week, consists of all skaters from both teams taking a penalty shot followed by 40 minutes of 3 on 3 hockey.
Team Orr trailed 7-6 after the penalty shot section and outscored Team Cherry 11-7 in the 3 on 3. Team Orr’s Eric Staal and Maxim Lapierre both scored twice to lead all scorers in the three on three. Staal, who was ranked as the top North American prospect in the NHL Central Scouting Bureau’s mid-term rankings, plays for the Peterborough Petes of the Ontario Hockey League. Lapierre plays for the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League’s Montreal Rocket.
Team Orr was aided by a strong goaltending performance by Jonathan Boutin of the Halifax Mooseheads. Boutin allowed just three goals in the second period of the 3 on 3 to perserve the win and he made six saves in the penalty shot section.
Nathan Horton of the Oshawa Generals scored once in the 3 on 3 for Team Cherry and he also added a goal in the penalty shot section. Marc-Andre Fleury of the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles, the top rated goaltender in the NHL Central Scouting Bureau’s Mid-Term Rankings, stopped seven penalty shots and allowed three goals in the 3 on 3.
