La Gambina backstops Flyers to OHL Cup Final
The Don Mills Flyers are advancing to the 2025 OHL Cup Final with 5-1 win over the Toronto Titans.
Three minutes into the contest a shot from Flyers defenceman Charlie Sullivan (1) would find the back of the net to give Don Mills the early lead. However, with 16 seconds left in the opening period Max Delisle (4) would pick up the loose puck and put it in the open to draw the Titans even after one.
The second period featured lots of fast and physical play with both teams getting chances, Charlie Murata (1) scored off a rebound to put the Flyers back on top heading to the third. The Titans would get their chances, but Flyers goaltender Noah La Gambina would make 12 of his 34 saves to shut the door.
Don Mills would seal the game in the third adding three goals with two from defenceman Richard Wang (4) and one from Evan Nicholson (4).
Having faced the Titans numerous times this season, La Gambina knew it was going to take a full team effort crediting the team in front of him saying, “We knew it was going to be a tough game, sticking to our game plan and playing hard. I have to give it to my defence, they all made my job easier with the work they did in front of me.”
“It’s an unreal experience. We know it’s going to be a battle. It’s been our goal all year and we’re going to go in playing hard,” said La Gambina looking ahead to the championship game and what it means to his team.
Don Mills appears in the final for the first time since 2019, when the team was led by Shane Wright, Brennan Othmann, and Brandt Clarke. They defeated the Toronto Red Wings in overtime to claim the title.
The Flyers will face the winner of the Detroit Little Caesars vs. Toronto Jr. Canadiens semi-final on Friday night at 7:00 p.m. at the Mattamy Athletic Centre.
Jeremy Freeman (4G, 5A) and Michael Tang (3G, 6A) led the Titans with nine points each, as the team finished with a 4-1 record.
