Kings edge Express to reach Quarter-Finals
A third period game winner from Luciano Bruno (2) gave the wild card entry Vaughan Kings what they needed to punch their ticket to the OHL Cup Quarter-Finals, defeating the OMHA champion York-Simcoe Express 3-2.
York-Simcoe’s Rylan Tait knotted the score at two with 5:29 remaining before Bruno struck just over a minute later to put Vaughan ahead for good. Sam O’Reilly (5) and Logan Sawyer (2) also contributed, each scoring a goal and an assist.
“It was important to get that win and I’m proud to have contributed to it. We were down early and battled back to win it,” said Bruno.
Landon Miller stayed solid in the crease for the Kings, blocking 20 shots for the win. The netminder earned Player of the Game honours.
York Simcoe’s OHL Cup action comes to an end as the Express finish with a record of 2-2, being led in scoring by Rylan Tait (3-1-4), Carson Littlejohn (2-2-4) and Jared McNeil (1-3-4).
Fighting their way into the tournament through a wild card win, the Kings will now face off against the Toronto Jr. Canadiens Saturday at 12:15pm in Quarter-Final action.
