Warren’s OT winner leads JRC to first in Subban division
The Toronto Jr. Canadiens prevailed 2-1 in overtime over the Sun County Panthers to clinch first in the group and advance to the OHL Cup Quarter-Finals.
Sun County Panthers forward Brayden Lappalainen (4) and Toronto Jr. Canadiens forward Noah Laus (2) scored early in the opening period. Goaltenders Hudson Cicchelli (23 SV) and Daniel Cinelli (25 SV) stood tall in the crease keeping the game deadlocked at one through regulation. The game would remain tied until top prospect Camryn Warren (3) roofed a shot with 9 seconds left in overtime to seal give his team the win.
“We were kind of playing it a bit safe there, since we knew we needed at least a tie to move on but we had the chance to take top spot in our group with a win. I saw the opportunity, took it, and was fortunate enough to put it in the back of the net,” described Warren, replaying his game winning goal.
Coming into the game, the Jr. Canadiens knew the importance with not only a quarterfinal spot on the line but also the opportunity to finish first in the group, “It means the world to advance and finish first in the group. We knew it was a big game. It’s the best tournament I’ve ever played in, it’s a lot of fun. I love these guys and hopefully we can do something special,” said Warren.
The Jr. Canadiens will play the second place team in the Shanahan division tomorrow morning at 11:45am.
Sun County also advances after Upper Canada lost this morning to Vaughan. The Panthers will face the Toronto Titans tomorrow morning in quarterfinal number one at 10:00am.
