Vaughan blanks York-Simcoe to remain undefeated
Joseph D’Angelo showed his ‘A’ game as he recorded his first shutout of the tournament, backstopping the Vaughan Kings past the York-Simcoe Express 4-0 on Tuesday night.
“I just wanted to give my team a chance to win,” said D’Angelo, “When you play against good opponents you always have to do your job and outshoot them.”
Another factor to the shutout victory was how well the Kings defence performed. “They [the defence] played amazing and I think one of their best attributes they did today was their gap control. It kept us on the offence all game and I did my job of passing pucks for them and slowing things down when needed.”
Vaughan goals were spread throughout the game which always kept the Express defence on edge.
The Kings’ first goal came midway through the second period when Tyler Clark (1) got a feed from teammate Zack Nyman and sniped a shot past Riley Barkey to open the scoring. Vaughan’s second goal came just before the period ended when Joey Kapel (1) provided an insurance marker, snapping home a shot low glove side past Barkey.
Gage Brandon (2) got his second goal of the tournament after a neutral zone giveaway left him and Alexander Hage a 2-on-1 the other way. After Hage’s initial shot was stopped, Brandon potted the rebound to make it 3-0. Vaughan’s final goal came from Elijah Chavez after he tipped a point shot from Clarence Allain to extend the lead to four.
D’Angelo stopped all 12 shots he faced for the win, while Express goaltender Riley Barkey made 29 saves in the loss.
Vaughan (2-0) will now take on TPH (2-0) for top spot in the Nash Division at 9:00am on Wednesday while York-Simcoe (0-3) will conclude their round-robin play against the Sun County Panthers (0-2) on Wednesday at 9:45am.
