Sens advance with defensive effort over Halton
The Mississauga Senators played what could be described as a very good road game on Tuesday, effectively shutting down the Halton Hurricanes for a 3-1 victory to advance to the 2016 OHL Cup.
Max Golod put Mississauga ahead for good 10:07 into the second period with a powerplay marker as Jeppe Meyer collected one of his two assists on the afternoon.
Up 2-1, the Senators locked up the neutral zone, smothering Halton’s attack while goaltender Alexis Gravel was there when called upon to secure the eventual 3-1 decision.
“The defencemen in front of me were excellent today,” noted Gravel, who hails from Asbestos, QC and is eligible for the 2016 QMJHL Draft. “We played our system well and took away their opportunities. I thought our penalty kill was very good.”
Olivier Charest and Martin Templeton also scored for Mississauga while Spencer Blackwell took a nice feed from Luke Beamish to register Halton’s lone goal in the loss.
The Senators return to the OHL Cup after an absence in 2015, joining the Subban Division that also consists of the OMHA Champion York Simcoe Express, the Toronto Red Wings and the Windsor Jr. Spitfires.
