Rebels hold off rival Flyers to improve to 1-1
Heading into the third period up 2-1, the Mississauga Rebels successfully defended their lead to see out their first win of the tournament.
After a tough loss to the Waterloo Wolves in their opening game, the eighth-ranked Rebels needed a win to remain in contention for the OHL Cup. It’s safe to say they came out hungry: Ethan Czata (1) netted a shorthanded goal just 1:57 into the opening frame.
When Shamar Moses (1) scored to even things up 1:43 into the second period, the Rebels did well not to panic. They stuck to their systems, checked hard and waited for their chance to pounce.
That scoring opportunity would arise 11 minutes later, and forward Tristan Delisle (1) made no mistake.
“I intercepted the puck on the half wall, cut across the ice and put it top cheddar,” he said, with a smile on his face.
Delisle’s goal would stand as the game-winner, with Don Mills goalie Abel Polan making several key third-period saves to keep the Flyers in the game.
Despite the fact that his goal kept his team alive, Delisle was quick to divert attention from himself, instead praising his team’s performance.
“Coach told us to give everything we have,” said the forward. “We checked hard and came out with a great team win.”
