Eight teams advance to OHL Cup Quarter-Finals
The 2024 OHL Cup presented by FPS Payment’s playoff round commences on Thursday as the field has been narrowed from 20 down to eight to begin the morning’s Quarter-Final round.
Here’s a look at which teams have emerged into the Great 8 as the puck drops at 10:00am this morning at Scotiabank Pond in Toronto.
10:00AM on Rink 2 – Oakville Rangers (3-1-0, 2nd Nash) vs. Barrie Jr. Colts (4-0-0, 1st Lindros)
A pair of familiar OMHA foes go head-to-head to start the morning as OMHA champion Barrie meets the Oakville Rangers, who skated to a first place record of 31-1-1-1 in West circuit regular season play. The two teams last met on March 17th in Brampton as Barrie opened the OMHA Championship round robin schedule with a 5-0 win over Oakville. 10:30AM on Rink 1 – Toronto Marlboros (3-1-0, 2nd Subban) vs. North York Rangers (4-0-0, 1st Shanahan)
GTHL adversaries face-off on the big stage of the OHL Cup. The Marlboros get another shot at North York, who eliminated them in the Semi-Final of the GTHL Playoffs. The Rangers have been powered by forward Brady Smith, who has scored eight of his team’s 18 goals to this point in the showcase. The Marlboros boast the event’s top scorer in Pierce Mbuyi, who tied an even record with six points (4-2–6) in Wednesday’s 6-1 win over Myers Automotive. Mbuyi leads the OHL Cup with 13 points (6-7–13) over four games. The Rangers defeated the Marlboros in all three of their regular season meetings.
11:45AM on Rink 2 – Mississauga Rebels (3-1-0, 2nd Lindros) vs. Vaughan Kings (4-0-0, 1st Nash)
Another GTHL clash sees the Mississauga Rebels and Vaughan Kings in a rematch of their GTHL Semi-Final series. Vaughan won that encounter in three straight games, and defeated the Rebels two out of three times during the regular season, with the third instance being a tie. Vaughan has looked very good to this point in the showcase, surrendering just four goals in as many games. The Rebels opened their tournament with an overtime loss to Barrie before rattling off victories over Ottawa Valley, Team NOHA and Elgin-Middlesex.
12:15PM on Rink 1 – Oshawa Generals (3-1-0, 2nd Shanahan) vs. Peterborough Petes (4-0-0, 1st Subban)
Two OMHA East rivals run into each other in Toronto today. Peterborough beat Oshawa by scores of 5-3 on two occasions at the OMHA Championships, the second instance coming in the Semi-Final. The Generals defeated the Petes in their OMHA East playoffs by a score of 5-2 on March 6th. Petes forward Colin Fitzgerald has been red hot this week, recording 11 points (7-4–11) in four games, good for the second-most points in the OHL Cup to this point. Oshawa goaltender Chase Petrova is among the tournament’s leaders with three wins, a goals-against average of 1.33 and a save percentage of .949.
