Edgcumbe’s shutout powers Niagara North into OHL Cup
On the back of a Liam Edgcumbe shutout the Niagara North Stars booked their spot in the 2024 OHL Cup with a 1-0 win over OMHA West rivals the Halton Hurricanes.
Scoreless through the opening period, underage talent Kieran Raynor (1G) opened the scoring early in the second period, tipping in a pass from Easton Poirier. Halton would have a chance to tie the game shortly after as they were awarded a penalty shot. As he did throughout the game, Edgcumbe would come up big denying the opportunity.
“It felt pretty good, playing well and coming up big for the team in a big game, my mom comes to all my games and she wasn’t able to be here this morning so it was pretty special getting to have a performance like that for her,” said the Niagara North goaltender as he spoke about his performance.
Getting into the Wild Card play-in game through a win in their final game at the OMHA Championships, Edgcumbe spoke about his team’s resilience over the course of the season saying, “We had to win our last game to sneak in here, but we just kept battling hard. Being with this team for three years I’m just so happy for our group and we’re excited to show what we can do.”
The Stars will now join the Subban Division where they will play the Peterborough Petes at 3:45 pm in their first game of the round robin.
