Cheeseman backstops Wolves to first win
The Waterloo Wolves came out flying as they picked up their first win with a 3-1 victory over the Niagara North Stars.
Trading goals in the first period, with Zack Forwell (1) scoring for the Wolves and Kieran Raynor (1) scoring for the North Stars. The teams would be deadlocked at one after the opening period. Michael Pope (1) and Max Wildfong (1) each found the back of the net to give Wolves the lead.
Goaltender Liam Cheeseman stood strong in the crease stopping 20 of 21 shots to help him earn Under Armour Player of the Game honours. North Stars goaltender Nick Soliman had a strong performance making 30 saves to earn Player of the Game for his team.
“We came out really fast, got pucks in deep and attacked them. The players in front of me played well, strong in the defensive zone, kept pucks and bodies to the outside. They mad it much easier for me to make saves,” said Cheeseman (20 SV) as the Wolves netminder spoke about what went well for him and his team.
Looking ahead to the rest of the round robin Cheeseman knows they’ll have to continue to play their game with some tough teams ahead saying, “We just have to play fast and play our game. We got a couple big games tomorrow starting with a really good Don Mills team. As long as we play our game we’ll have a chance.”
The Wolves will try to make it two in a row tomorrow morning at 9:45am when they take on the Don Mills Flyers. While the North Stars will look to get in the win column this evening when they play the Barrie Colts at 7:00pm.
