2014 OHL Cup Day 1 Results
The 2014 OHL Cup Showcase Tournament began on Tuesday with four round-robin games following a trio of Wild Card ‘Play In’ contests.
Game 1: Hamilton Jr Bulldogs 2 vs. Toronto Jr Canadiens 1
Despite a short bench, the Hamilton Jr Bulldogs grinded out a 2-1 victory over the GTHL champion, Toronto Jr Canadiens, to kick off play at the 2014 OHL Cup.
Early in the first, Bulldogs captain, Brandon Saigeon, unleashed a wicked wrister to put Hamilton ahead. The Jr. Canadiens would respond minutes later when Adam Timleck jammed the puck home during a scramble in the crease.
Late in the second period off a face-off, Hamilton’s Brendan D’Agostino capitalized to put the Bulldogs ahead.
In the third period, the Jr Canadiens were relentless with pressure but, Bulldogs netminder Jonah Capriotti was lights out denying Toronto on multiple chances including shutting down a Jr Canadiens powerplay in the final two minutes.

Game 2: Vaughan Kings 3 vs. Whitby Wildcats 3
Vaughan and Whitby combined for five goals in just over six minutes of the second period, but the goal scoring stopped their as the two teams ended their tournament opener in a 3-3 tie.
The Wildcats Chase St. Aubin opened the scoring with the lone marker of the first period.
Midway through the second period the goals would come fast and furious.
Joshua Argier added to the Whitby lead at 8:20 but only 45 seconds later Vaughan would respond with a powerplay goal from Jack Landry, followed by another powerplay marker from Justin Bennett just minutes later.
Whitby wouldn’t waste time replying with a powerplay goal of their own only 1:53 later off the stick of Aiger for his second goal of the game.
The goal light continued to get a workout as Connor Lamont evened the game 30 seconds later at 3-3.
Surprisingly neither team could find the back of the net in the third period and overtime.
Whitby’s Matthew Bumstead, led all scorers with three assists.

Game 3: Chatham-Kent Cyclones 3 vs. Mississauga Senators 1
The Chatham-Kent Cyclones cashed in a big third period to defeat the Mississauga Senators 3-1.
After a scoreless first period, Senators forward Jason Di Perna came down the right wing and blasted home the first goal of the game.
With a period to go and down by the one, Chatham-Kent came out flying in the third period.
The Cyclones’ Ben Nicholls tied things up early in the frame with a shot from the top of the circle that found a way through a screen.
In the late stages of the third, the Senators would head to the box and Chatham-Kent would make them pay when Jarret Marks put home a loose puck at the side of the net.
In the final minute, Ryan Greenaway would bury an empty-netter to seal a 3-1 victory for Chatham-Kent.
Joseph Raaymakers was solid from start to finish in net for the Cyclones making some big saves to keep the Cyclones in it early.

Game 4: Toronto Marlboros 3 vs. Southern Tier Admirals 1
The Toronto Marlboros kicked-off the 2014 OHL Cup with a 3-1 victory over the Southern Tier Admirals.
After a scoreless first, Marlboro Michael Kelaiditis scored 44 seconds into the second to break the deadlock. Joseph Mizzi would follow it up with a bullet shot from the point to extend the Toronto lead.
Early in the third, Southern Tier’s Mitchell Mendonca would get the Admirals to within one but Micahel McLeod would restore the two goal lead partway through the third to lift the Marlboros to a 3-1 victory.
