[{"id":299072,"date":"2026-07-08T13:01:23","date_gmt":"2026-07-08T17:01:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/chl.ca\/ohl\/?p=299072"},"modified":"2026-07-08T13:01:23","modified_gmt":"2026-07-08T17:01:23","slug":"battalions-ryan-oulahen-named-head-coach-of-canadas-national-mens-summer-under-18-team","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/chl.ca\/ohl\/article\/battalions-ryan-oulahen-named-head-coach-of-canadas-national-mens-summer-under-18-team","title":{"rendered":"Battalion&#8217;s Ryan Oulahen named Head Coach of Canada&#8217;s National Men&#8217;s Summer Under-18 Team"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>CALGARY, Alberta \u2013 <\/strong>Hockey Canada has named the coaching staff that will lead Canada\u2019s National Men\u2019s Summer Under-18 Team at the 2026 Hlinka Gretzky Cup, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hlinkagretzkycup.ca\/en-ca\/season\/2026\/stats\/schedule?tournament=true\">Aug. 3-8 in Edmonton<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Ryan Oulahen (Newmarket, ON\/North Bay Battalion), who served as an assistant coach at the 2024 Hlinka Gretzky Cup in Edmonton when Canada last won gold, will take the reins as head coach as Canada looks for its 26th summer U18 gold medal.<\/p>\n<p>Additional coaching staff include Ryan McDonald (Prince Albert, SK\/Prince Albert, WHL), Brad MacKenzie (Charlottetown, PE\/Halifax, QMJHL) and Kyle Chipchura (Westlock, AB\/Edmonton, WHL) who will serve as assistant coaches, with goaltending coach Jeff Harvey (St. Albert, AB\/Saskatoon, WHL) and video coach Matthew Smith (Tatamagouche, NS\/Newfoundland, QMJHL).<\/p>\n<p>The coaching staff was selected by\u00a0Program of Excellence general manager Alan Millar (Tottenham, ON),\u00a0Yanick Lemay (Drummondville, QC\/Drummondville, QMJHL), assistant general manager of Canada\u2019s National Men\u2019s Summer Under-18 Team, Scott Salmond (Creston, BC), senior vice-president of high performance and hockey operations, and Benoit Roy (Sudbury, ON), director of hockey operations.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are thrilled to welcome Ryan, Ryan, Brad and Kyle to the staff for the Hlinka Gretzky Cup,\u201d said Millar. \u201cEach brings a pedigree of coaching experience, particularly in short-term international competition, which will be a tremendous asset as we prepare for the tournament. We\u2019re excited to continue the process of building a team and working with a group of players who will proudly represent Canada and showcase their talent to hockey fans in Edmonton in August.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Oulahen just completed his seventh season as head coach of the North Bay Battalion of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) and second season as assistant general manager. Prior to joining North Bay, he spent three seasons as head coach of the OHL\u2019s Flint Firebirds and six seasons as an assistant coach with the Battalion (2010-16). Oulahen has previously served as an assistant coach with Canada\u2019s National Men\u2019s Summer Under-18 Team, winning a gold medal in 2024 and 2018. He also served as an assistant coach at the World Under-17 Hockey Challenge with Canada Red (2014) and Canada Black (2015), and as head coach of Canada White (2016).<\/p>\n<p>Support staff out of the Ontario Hockey League that will work with Canada\u2019s National Men\u2019s Summer Under-18 Team at the 2026 Hlinka Gretzky Cup include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Team physician Danielle Kelton (London, ON\/London Knights)<\/li>\n<li>Equipment manager J.R. Grant (Windsor, ON\/Windsor Spitfires)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The roster for Canada\u2019s National Men\u2019s Summer Under-18 Team training camp will be announced at a later date.<\/p>\n<p>Canada will play its opening game of the 2026 Hlinka Gretzky Cup on Aug. 3 at 5 p.m. MT. It will also face Slovakia on Aug. 4 and Sweden on Aug. 5 to close out the preliminary round before the tournament concludes with the medal games on Aug. 8. Canada\u2019s National Men\u2019s Summer Under-18 Team will hold a training camp prior to the start of the tournament, set for <a href=\"https:\/\/hockeycanada.ca\/en-ca\/team-canada\/men\/under-18\/2026-27\/selection-camp\/practice-schedule\">July 27-30<\/a> at NAIT Arena in Edmonton, which will include practices and a game against Sweden on July 30. The 6\u20190, 190 pound defencemen played a complete game recording 47 points in 28 games last season. He also showed his compete in the team\u2019s playoffs with another 19 points from the blueline in only 8 games. In addition to his strong play, Ryan captained his club to a<br \/>\nU16 Alliance Championship and was named to the OHL Cup All Star Team with 11 points in 6 games.<\/p>\n<p>Ryan is a second generation London Knight. His Father, Josh Beaulieu played for the Knights from 2003-07 winning a Memorial Cup in 2005.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cWe are very happy to have Ryan in our organization. A six-foot-two, 192-pound Ottawa resident, he had five goals and 19 assists for 24 points in 17 regular-season games and added 10 points, including six goals, in 12 playoff games. The Rangers will host the Erie Otters, Oshawa Generals and Saginaw Spirit for a quartet of action over Labour Day weekend.<\/p>\n<p>In total, 16 games will be played at non-OHL venues, part of the League&#8217;s continued effort to bring exhibition hockey to communities across Ontario and beyond. In 37 USHL games with the USNTDP, he collected seven points (2G+7A).<\/p>\n<p>McArthur is committed to the University of Minnesota where he hopes to make an impact following his time in the OHL.<\/p>\n<p>He is noted as a dynamic defenseman with the ability to make plays offensively and can really shine on the power play.
