Wolves extend Head Coach Trent Cull’s contract and hire Assistants

WOLVES ‘ HEAD COACH RECEIVES CONTRACT EXTENTION

As the Sudbury Wolves prepare for the upcoming 2012-13 OHL season, the hockey club is pleased to make the following important announcements:

Head Coach Trent Cull has been granted an extention to his current contract by Wolves’ owner Mark Burgess.  The extention will carry Cull through until the end of the 2013-14 season.  Cull led the Wolves to their best regular season record in the past eleven seasons and the organization feels that the best years are yet to come under Cull’s direction.

“Trent has done a great job helping to turn the team’s fortunes around since his arrival here in Sudbury two years ago” says Wolves’ CEO Mark Burgess.  “Trent and his family have made Sudbury their home and he has earned the opportunity to continue to lead this team to greater success in the next two years.   Trent has also done a great job of leading and representing our team and we are thrilled to have Trent as the Head Coach of the Sudbury Wolves.”

WOLVES ADD ASSISTANT COACHES

Wolves’ Head Coach Trent Cull is pleased to announce the hiring of assistant coach David Bell.   Bell comes to Sudbury from the Quad City Mallards of the CHL where he served as the Head Coach and General Manager for one season.   Prior to that, Bell was an assistant coach with the Barrie Colts for two seasons and played an important role in the Colts’ run to the OHL finals in 2010.   Bell also served as an assistant coach with the Owen Sound Attack for three seasons as well as a two-year stint as an assistant coach with Springfield of the AHL.   Bell is a former captain and defenceman with the Ottawa 67’s where he played four seasons for Brian Kilrea.   Bell played in 471 professional games in the AHL, ECHL and UHL.     

“I am very pleased to welcome Dave as a key member of our coaching staff” notes Cull.  “He is a hard worker and I know that our players will benefit from his experience both as a coach and a former player.   I’ve known Dave personally for a number of years and I feel very fortunate to have a coach of Dave’s calibre available to us at this stage of the year.   Dave will be a very important part of our team success due to his teaching ability, work ethic and professionalism.”

Wolves’ Head Coach Trent Cull also announced that former Wolves’ forward Jason Young will be joining the team as a second assistant coach.  The Wolves’ alumnus played for the Wolves in the early  90’s and was drafted by the Buffalo Sabres.  Young played professional hockey in Europe for 15 years and also played in the American Hockey League and Canada’s Mens National team.  Young retired two years ago and returned to Canada.   As a skilled offensive forward, Young brings a wealth of knowledge as a former OHL and professional player.

“Jason is a local guy that brings a lot of knowledge and enthusiasm to our coaching staff” notes Cull.  “Jason will help us out primarily with our forwards and will offer specific skill development based on his experience at the forward position.”   Young recently pursued his interest in coaching as an assistant coach of the Nickel City Sons Major Midgets.  Young also served as the head coach of the Northern Ontario Minor Midget team that represented the North at the OHL Cup in March.

Dave Bell and Jason Young will be joining the Wolves’ organization officially during the last week of August.   They will both be on hand for the team’s main training camp which begins September 1st at the Sudbury Arena.   The team is currently en route to Russia to represent Canada in a 10-nation hockey tournament over the next two weeks.
