Williamson wins 400th OHL game
Friday January 9, 2015
It was a fitting venue for an IceDogs win on Thursday night at the Barrie Molson Centre. Head Coach Marty Williamson collected his 400th career OHL coaching victory in the same building that he earned a good portion of them as Head Coach of the Barrie Colts from 2004-2010.
Williamson’s Niagara IceDogs overcame a 2-0 first period deficit to score five unanswered in a 5-2 victory, snapping Barrie’s seven game winning streak. The milestone victory is Niagara’s third consecutive win and seventh in the last ten games, improving their record to 15-21-0-2 on the season.
After spending six seasons in Barrie where he collected 239 of his 400 wins, Williamson took the role of Head Coach and General Manager with the IceDogs to begin the 2010-11 season. He’s coached the IceDogs to a collective record of 161-125-7-17, with an Eastern Conference title and appearance in the 2012 OHL Finals.
During his time in St. Catharines, Williamson has contributed to the development of current NHL talent in Dougie Hamilton (Boston Bruins) and Ryan Strome (New York Islanders) as well as top NHL prospects in Mark Visentin (Arizona Coyotes), Freddie Hamilton (San Jose Sharks), Andrew Agozzino (Colorado Avalanche), Carter Verhaeghe (Toronto Maple Leafs) and Brendan Perlini (Arizona Coyotes).
With his current record of 400-309-9, Williamson is fourth in career wins among active OHL coaches. He is two wins behind former Guelph, Hamilton and Kitchener coach Eddie Bush for 13th on the OHL’s all-time list.
Williamson and the IceDogs are back in action tonight in Sudbury at 7:30pm.
