Wellwood Named OHL Player of the Week
Toronto – The Ontario Hockey League today announced that Windsor Spitfires centre Kyle Wellwood is the OHL Player of the Week for the week ending Sunday April 7, 2002 after scoring five goals and two assists to help the Spitfires to a 2-0 lead over the Guelph Storm in their best-of-seven Western Conference semifinal series.
Wellwood, the OHL scoring leader in 2000-01, opened the series with a hat trick and an assist to lead the Spitfires to a 7-3 win on the series opener on Friday. Wellwood followed up with two goals, including a short-handed marker, and one assist as the Spitfires took game two 5-4 on Sunday.
Wellwood, a 19-year-old Oldcastle native, improved his playoff scoring totals to eight goals and four assists for 12 points in eight games. He has scored 14 goals and 27 assists for 41 points in 34 career playoff games with Windsor and the Belleville Bulls.
