Bulldogs to top of standings with wins in 14 of last 15
The Hamilton Bulldogs had another successful week, winning all four games to earn their seventh straight win. Logan Morrison posted his sixth straight multi-point effort in a 10-2 win over Niagara on Sunday to earn OHL Player of the Week honours with 13 points in 4 games. Veteran blueliner Nathan Staios recorded his 52nd point of the season, surpassing Kade Landry (2018-19) for the most by a Bulldogs defenceman in a single season. Mason McTavish returned to the Hamilton lineup over the weekend, and blueliner Arber Xhekaj has registered 11 points (4-7–11) and a plus-25 rating in his 16 games as a Bulldog. Hamilton owns a league-leading winning percentage of .723.

Allen, Buchinger a force on Storm blue line
Guelph’s rookie blueliners made a big impact as the Storm won three of four last week. NHL Draft prospect Michael Buchinger tallied 11 points (2-9–11) in four games while third overall 2021 OHL Priority Selection choice Cam Allen scored his first career hat trick on Sunday, recording seven points (4-3–7) on the week. The weekend included a big 7-1 win over the Windsor Spitfires on Friday, drawing Guelph to within four points of the fourth place Spits for home ice advantage in the first round of the playoffs.

Gushchin’s streak continues
Niagara’s Danil Gushchin continues to put up points for the IceDogs win or lose. Leading his team in points (32-23–55), the San Jose Sharks prospect currently holds a 17-game point streak as he recorded a four-point night on Thursday, scoring two goals and two assists as the IceDogs defeated the North Bay Battalion 6-3. Gushchin’s run dates back to Dec. 11th.

Evangelista with 41 goals in 41 games
Luke Evangelista‘s astonishing pace continued over the weekend as the Nashville Predators prospect scored in three straight games, giving himself 41 goals in as many games. The Oakville, Ont. native rounded-out the weekend with his third hat trick of the season on Saturday as the London Knights defeated Sault Ste. Marie 3-0. He follows Connor McMichael (47, 2019-20) and Kevin Hancock (52, 2018-19) to give the Knights a 40-goal scorer in each of the past three seasons. His 41 goals are the most in the OHL while his 80 points place him fifth.

Donoso sharp as 67’s collect five of six points in last three
Max Donoso saw the crease in three straight starts, backstopping the Ottawa 67’s to a much-needed five points with wins over Kingston and Mississauga along with an overtime loss in Hamilton. The Barber Poles entered Wednesday’s play with losses in five straight, surrendering 25 goals in four games. Vinzenz Rohrer, Jack Beck and Tyler Boucher chipped in with offence to help Ottawa embark on five straight on the road, now sitting seventh in the Eastern Conference with a record of 22-24-2-3.

Bounce back weekend for the Bears
Owen Sound ended an eight-game losing slide on Friday as Servac Petrovsky and Colby Barlow both scored twice to defeat the Kitchener Rangers 6-2 at the Aud. The Attack continued their winnings on Woolley Warriors Night against Guelph on Saturday as Barlow scored two more to give him 19 goals on the season, tied for second-most by an OHL rookie. Sam Sedley scored his third goal of the season 2:37 into overtime as the Attack climb to sixth in the Western Conference with a record of 21-23-2-2.

Papais equals Storm record
Matthew Papais scored a pair of goals in Saturday’s 3-2 overtime win over the Owen Sound Attack. The first came just nine seconds into the game, tying a Storm franchise record previously accomplished on two occasions. Jamie Wright did it on Mar. 18, 1994 in London, and Sylvain Cloutier also scored nine seconds into regulation on Feb. 26, 1992 at the same Bayshore Community Centre. The 20-year-old from Nobleton, Ont. has 18 goals, 11 assists and 29 points in 38 games this season.

Christy on the mend for Spirit
Newly-recruited Saginaw Spirit forward Carson Christy is in recovery after leaving Friday’s 8-1 win over the Erie Otters in the second period. Christy was taken to Covenant Hospital for precautionary measures and was reported awake, alert and in good spirits. The Spirit followed-up with an update on Saturday reporting that he’d been released from hospital. The late 2004-born forward was selected in the second round of the 2020 OHL Priority Selection by the Mississauga Steelheads, having his OHL debut set back due to injury. He’s skated in four games with Saginaw this season after being acquired in December.

Troops round out road trip with a win
A streaky 2021-22 season continues for the North Bay Battalion, who at one point had lost six in a row from Dec. 11-31, five in a row from Jan. 22-28, and won nine in a row from Jan. 30 to Feb. 20. The Battalion fell 6-3 in Niagara on Thursday, lost 7-2 in Hamilton on Friday but righted the ship on Sunday as Brandon Coe returned to the lineup with three assists, helping the boys in green defeat rival Sudbury 6-2. Edmonton Oilers prospect Matvey Petrov scored and chipped in two assists, joining Mitchell Russell in scoring for the 30th time this season. The Battalion are 29-17-3-3, sitting four points behind first place Mississauga in the Central Division. Kyle McDonald is two goals shy of giving the Troops four 30-goal scorers for the first time in franchise history.

Lalonde earns first career shutout as Otters rebound in Saginaw
Rookie netminder Nolan Lalonde made 23 saves for his first career OHL shutout as the Erie Otters rebounded from an 8-1 loss to blank Saginaw on Saturday. Lalonde won again on Sunday in Flint, stopping 24 of 27 as the Otters ended Flint’s 11-game point streak in a 7-3 decision. The 18-year-old from Kingston, Ont. leads OHL rookies with 38 games played, 18 wins and a 3.64 goals-against average as the Otters sit seventh in the Western Conference.
