Under-17 Camp Opens June 21

Toronto – One hundred of the top 16-year-old hockey players in the province of Ontario will soon be preparing for the upcoming 2002 Ontario Under 17 Provincial Selection Camp being held at the Beatrice Ice Gardens (York University), June 21-25, 2002.

The goal of the provincial selection camp is to provide the players with an intensive training opportunity and also to continue the process of identifying players who will represent Ontario at the 2003 Canada Winter Games in Bathurst, New Brunswick from February 22 to March 8, 2003.

“I am looking forward to evaluating this group of talented athletes. They are all eager to compete and should provide an intense and competitive camp,” remarked Under 17 Program Director of Operations, Alan Millar. Millar, along with Head Coach Bob Jones and Assistant Coaches Shawn Camp and Mark French will be preparing and evaluating the attending players.

The one hundred players were selected from various regional camps held throughout the province during April and May. There is representation at the camp from each Branch/Division in Ontario. In total, over 1,500 players attended the Regional Talent Identification camps.

This year’s provincial camp will be hosted by the Greater Toronto Hockey League and will include on-ice and off-ice training sessions, guest speakers on a variety of topics, and daily scrimmage sessions.

The Ontario Under 17 Program is a component of the CHA Program of Excellence. The program is coordinated through the Hockey Development Centre for Ontario and its member organizations. The program receives support from the Ontario Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Recreation.
