Three Former OHL Players Advance to NHL Officiating System

The Ontario Hockey League is pleased to congratulate officials Nick Isaacson, Hayden Verbeek and Chris Martenet, who have been hired by the National Hockey League on minor-league officiating contracts for the 2026-27 season. All three arrive in the NHL officiating system after previously playing in the Ontario Hockey League before returning to the league as officials. Isaacson and Martenet were both selected to participate in the 2025 CHL/NHL Officials' Development Camp in St-Hyacinthe, Que. last November, where they worked directly with NHL officiating supervisors through classroom meetings, video review and game assignments. Less than a year later, both have earned the opportunity to advance into the professional officiating ranks. "To have three former OHL players earn NHL officiating contracts is an outstanding accomplishment for Nick, Hayden and Chris, and a proud moment for our program," said OHL Director of Officiating Conrad Haché. "They understood the game at a high level as players and have put in an incredible amount of work to learn a completely different side of it as officials. Their progression shows there is another meaningful path in hockey after a playing career ends, and we're proud that the OHL could play a role in preparing all three for this opportunity." Isaacson, an Oakville, Ont. native, completed his first season as an OHL referee in 2025-26 following an extensive playing career that included four seasons in the league. The 6-foot-3 forward joined the Peterborough Petes during the 2015-16 season and remained with the club through parts of four seasons before finishing his OHL career with the Mississauga Steelheads. Isaacson appeared in 224 regular season games, recording 43 goals, 61 assists and 104 points, while adding four points in 16 playoff contests. He went on to play at the University of Guelph before beginning a professional career that included stops in the ECHL and American Hockey League. Isaacson returned to the OHL in a different role in 2025-26, immediately joining the league as a referee and earning a spot at the CHL/NHL Officials' Development Camp during his first season. Verbeek completed his second season as an OHL official in 2025-26 and his first as a referee after making the transition from playing to officiating following the conclusion of his professional career overseas. Originally selected by the Soo Greyhounds in the fourth round, 71st overall, of the 2013 OHL Priority Selection, the Kingston, Ont. native played five seasons with Sault Ste. Marie. Verbeek appeared in 250 regular season games, recording 49 goals, 60 assists and 109 points, along with 17 points over 47 playoff appearances. His playing career continued professionally for six seasons, including time in the American Hockey League and ECHL along with stops in Slovakia and Germany. Following his final playing season with Eispiraten Crimmitschau of Germany's DEL2 in 2023-24, Verbeek moved into officiating and quickly progressed through the OHL ranks. Martenet, an Indianapolis, Ind. native, completed his first season as an OHL linesperson in 2025-26 after an extensive playing career of his own. The 6-foot-7 defenceman was selected by the London Knights in the fourth round of the 2014 OHL Priority Selection and spent parts of three seasons in the league with London and the Ottawa 67's. Martenet appeared in 158 OHL regular season games, recording 10 goals, 29 assists and 39 points, while adding eight points across 34 playoff contests. Selected by the Dallas Stars in the fourth round, 103rd overall, of the 2015 NHL Draft, Martenet went on to play professionally in the American Hockey League and ECHL before continuing his career overseas. His final playing season came with the Glasgow Clan of the Elite Ice Hockey League in 2024-25. Martenet joined the OHL officiating staff the following season and was selected for the CHL/NHL Officials' Development Camp just months into his first year as a linesperson. The advancement of Isaacson, Verbeek and Martenet continues a recent run of OHL officials moving into the NHL system. Linesperson Shawn Oliver earned a minor-league NHL contract ahead of the 2025-26 season following five seasons in the OHL. The OHL Officiating Program provides officials with regular coaching, evaluation and game experience while working alongside veteran officials throughout the regular season and playoffs. Opportunities such as the annual CHL/NHL Officials' Development Camp provide an additional connection between the CHL's development programs and professional officiating. Isaacson, Verbeek and Martenet will begin their first seasons in the NHL officiating system in 2026-27.

We spoke with General Manager Jan Egert about the club’s 2026 draft class and some of the new faces fans should keep an eye on heading into the upcoming season. 2026 Draft Class Revisit: Player Spotlight: Andrew Laurin Profile: 6’1”, 176lbs, right-shot forward Hometown: Belleville, ON Birthdate: Apr 9, 2010 Drafted: 1st Round, 18th Overall (2026 OHL Priority Selection) 2025-26 Stats (Quinte Red Devils U16 AAA): 34 GP, 26G, 25A, 51 PTS Selected 18th overall in the 2026 OHL Priority Selection, Andrew Laurin spent the past three seasons with the Quinte Red Devils program. During the 2025-26 campaign, he recorded 51 points (26-25–51) in 34 games before adding another 12 points (6-6–12) across eight postseason contests. “Our scouting staff highlighted Andrew as a priority player of interest quite early in the evaluation season. He is a multi-dimensional winger who can play with pace and physicality, and competes for his ice. He can score in various ways. Attack add five new members to scouting staff

OWEN SOUND, ON – The Owen Sound Attack Hockey Club announced today the hiring of five new additions to the scouting staff, including Victor Carneiro, Chase Rochon, Alex Adams, Bret Lewandowski and Kyle Carpenter. Victor Carneiro joins the Attack with over 25 years of scouting experience at various levels, most recently spending the past two seasons as a scouting consultant with the Brampton Steelheads. Carneiro got his start as a scout with the London Knights in 1999, covering the Greater Toronto Area, after spending the prior four seasons working as game-day staff with the Knights. In 2010, he joined the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds scouting staff, where he spent 8 seasons, including the last 5 as the team's Director of Player Personnel alongside current Pittsburgh Penguins General Manager, Kyle Dubas. During this tenure in the Ontario Hockey League, he was also on staff with Ontario's Under-17 team for four years, helping Ontario win three gold medals and one silver medal at the Under-17 World Hockey Challenge. In 2018, Carneiro made the jump to the National Hockey League when he joined the Toronto Maple Leafs, spending 6 seasons as an amateur scout covering the OHL and the Ontario region for the Leafs. Carneiro will take on the role of Ontario Scout as well as joining the Attack’s Hockey Operations Staff. Chase Rochon joins the Attack after spending the past three seasons with the St. Andrew’s College hockey program, where he currently serves as Director of Hockey Operations and Recruitment lead. In his role with St. Andrew’s, Chase is involved in player recruitment and evaluation, scouting, video and analytics, while working closely with the coaching staff in the day-to-day operations of the hockey program. Outside of St. Andrew’s, Chase has worked with players and various teams across the GOHL and minor hockey through video coaching, player development and evaluation. His experience has included extensive work in video analysis and live evaluation of players across Ontario, including OHL Draft-eligible prospects. Rochon will take on the role as Ontario/ U.S. Scout as well as joining the Attack’s Hockey Operations Staff. Bret Lewandowski joins the Attack as a U.S. Scout with more than a decade of experience coaching youth AAA hockey across the Metro Detroit area, including serving as the assistant coach with the HoneyBaked Hockey Club for over six years. Lewandowski has developed elite players and built competitive, high‑character teams. Lewandowski spent the 2025–26 season serving as an OHL scout for the Niagara IceDogs, bringing a sharp eye for talent evaluation and deep regional knowledge to the team's staff. Alex Adams will join the hockey club as an Ontario Scout this season; he brings 13 years of experience in coaching, skill development and scouting to the Attack. Adams is a former ECHL player who retired in 2019 and has since shifted his focus to player development and video analysis. Currently, Adams coaches with the U16 AAA Oakville Rangers and has spent the past several seasons doing video work with OHL draft-eligible players. Kyle Carpenter will be joining the Attack as a Goaltending Scout, bringing close to a decade of experience working with goaltenders. Prior to scouting, Carpenter worked as a goaltending coach in both Europe and Canada before beginning his scouting career with the Nepean Raiders of the CCHL in 2023-24. He joined the Renfrew Wolves as a Scout in 2024-25 before being promoted to Head Scout and Goaltending Scout for the 2025-26 season. Colts add Finch and Teakle to Hockey Operations Department

The Barrie Colts announced today that Kyle Finch and Justin Teakle have joined the organization, with Finch serving as Assistant Coach & Video Coach and Teakle as Director of Prospect Development.

Finch will work alongside the Colts’ bench staff while also leading the club’s video program, breaking down game and practice footage to support in-game strategy and player development throughout the season. He will report to the club’s hockey operations staff and collaborate directly with the coaching group.

Teakle steps into the newly formed Director of Prospect Development role, bringing more than a decade of coaching and player-development experience to the position. He spent over ten years coaching in the Ontario Junior Hockey League, with stops at the Streetsville Derbys, Cobourg Cougars, and two seasons as an assistant coach with the Trenton Golden Hawks, before being named Head Coach and Director of Player Personnel of the Toronto Patriots.

Knights sign goaltender Kobe Nadalin

LONDON, ON - The London Knights are pleased to announce the signing of Goaltender Kobe Nadalin to an OHL Scholarship and Development Agreement. Nadalin joins the Knights organization following a strong 2025-26 season split between the Woodstock Navy Vets and Waterloo Siskins. The Woodstock, Ontario native appeared in 18 regular-season games with the Navy Vets, posting a 12-3-2 record along with a 2.04 goals-against average and a .945 save percentage. Nadalin also appeared in six playoff games, recording a .921 save percentage. Nadalin also made three appearances with the Waterloo Siskins, finishing with a 1.62 goals-against average, a .954 save percentage.

As August draws to a close, the OHL preseason is fast approaching! Teams across the league are gearing up for the weeks ahead, with training camps set to kick off as early as this weekend. Here’s a brief overview of what to expect across the OHL as teams prepare for the 2026-27 season. Additional details, including training camp rosters, will be shared as they become available.

Barrie Colts: The Barrie Colts will open training camp on Monday, August 24, at Sadlon Arena with fitness testing before shifting to intrasquad games on Tuesday, August 25, and Wednesday, August 26. The week continues with the annual Blue vs. White scrimmage on Thursday at 6:00 p.m., with free admission. Training camp will conclude with the Barrie Showcase on Saturday, August 29, and Sunday, August 30. The Colts will host the two-day preseason event at Sadlon Arena, featuring four OHL clubs: Barrie, the Owen Sound Attack, the Oshawa Generals, and the Brantford Bulldogs. Tickets for the showcase are $10 and will be available at the door. Camp Details Brampton Steelheads: The Brampton Steelheads will hold training camp at the CAA Centre from Tuesday, August 25, through Thursday, August 27. Bulldogs acquire Quinn Kipfer from Battalion

The Brantford Bulldogs and North Bay Battalion have completed a trade, with the Bulldogs acquiring 2008-born forward Quinn Kipfer from the Battalion in exchange for Brantford’s 12th-round selection in the 2028 OHL Priority Selection.

Kipfer spent the past two seasons with the Stratford Warriors of the GOJHL, recording 36 points (14-22–36). He led the Warriors in playoff scoring last season with 19 points (12-7–19) over 12 games.

Kipfer was originally selected by North Bay in the fifth round, 90th overall, of the 2024 OHL Priority Selection and appeared in two games with the Battalion during the 2025-26 season.

Firebirds acquire Bogas from Sting in exchange for Pickersgill and draft selections

The Flint Firebirds and Sarnia Sting announced Friday that the Firebirds have acquired the rights to defenceman Nicholas Bogas from Sarnia in exchange for defenceman Landon Pickersgill and four draft selections.

Bogas is a left-handed defenceman who played for the U.S. National Team Development Program last season. The Royal Oak, Michigan native was selected 139th overall by the St. Louis Blues in the fifth round of the 2026 NHL Draft. In 37 games last season, Bogas recorded two goals, two assists and a plus-nine rating. Sarnia originally selected Bogas in the 11th round of the 2024 OHL Priority Selection.

In exchange for Bogas, Sarnia acquires Landon Pickersgill, a 2027 third-round pick, a 2029 fourth-round pick, a 2030 fourth-round pick and a conditional 2030 15th-round pick. The conditional 15th-round pick reverts to a fifth-round pick should the conditions be met.

Pickersgill was selected by Flint in the seventh round of the 2025 OHL Priority Selection and recorded 13 goals and 27 assists for 40 points in 55 games with the Leamington Flyers of the OJHL last season. The Windsor, Ontario native was the highest-scoring defenceman on the Flyers and signed his Standard Player Agreement with Flint on July 31, 2026.

“Pickersgill is a strong defenceman with very good offensive instincts. He adds depth to our age group and to our defensive position”, said Sarnia Sting General Manager Dylan Seca. “This is another reliable defender who we think can help support our group overall”.

The Firebirds also provided a scouting report on Bogas from Head Scout Mike Oliverio.

“Nick adds another element to our d-core. He is physical and is rarely outworked in his own end. He has played major minutes at the international level and was relied heavily on by his coaching staff. His compete and composure will be assets to our back end.”

Colts add Daniel Sisca and Mario Cavaliere to Hockey Operations Department

The Barrie Colts announced that Daniel Sisca has joined the organization as Director of Skill Development and Mario Cavaliere has joined as Goaltending Coach. The additions come as the Colts continue to build out their hockey operations staff ahead of the 2026-27 Ontario Hockey League season.

Sisca brings five seasons of OHL experience to his new role, having played for the Owen Sound Attack, Mississauga Steelheads and Sarnia Sting. Over 314 career OHL games, Sisca recorded 332 points, including 140 goals and 192 assists.

Following his junior career, Sisca turned professional, beginning in the ECHL, where he was named to the ECHL All-Rookie Team, before advancing to the AHL and spending three additional seasons playing professionally in Europe.

Since retiring as a player, Sisca has focused on player development, working with athletes across a range of age groups and skill levels to help them refine their game and reach their full potential. That experience will now be put to work with Barrie’s roster as the club looks to strengthen its skill-development program at every level of the organization.

Cavaliere steps into his role as the Colts round out their coaching staff ahead of training camp and the 2026-27 Ontario Hockey League season.

A Mississauga, Ontario native, Cavaliere played the position at multiple levels before transitioning into coaching, and brings a goaltender’s perspective to a Barrie crease that will be relied upon as the club continues its push towards the regular season.

Cavaliere will work closely with Barrie’s goaltending group throughout the season, partnering with Director of Goaltending Frank Palazzese to build out the club’s goaltending program and reporting to the club’s hockey operations staff.
