Petes sign local forward Mason Quinn

Peterborough Petes General Manager and Vice President of Operations Michael Oke announced today that the team has signed 2026 third round pick Mason Quinn to an OHL Scholarship and Development Agreement. “It’s an honour to sign with such a great organization,” exclaimed Quinn. “Being a hometown kid, it really means the world to me and my family to be able to join the Petes. I’m very eager to get going and make a positive impact on the team.” Quinn, a native of Little Britain, ON, was selected by the Petes in the third round, 59th overall, of the 2026 OHL Priority Selection. In 28 games with the Toronto Marlboros U16s last season, he scored 15 goals and added 10 assists for 25 points. The 2010-born forward also helped the Marlboros qualify for the 2026 OHL Cup, where he added a goal in four games. Before joining the Marlboros for his U16 season, Quinn grew up playing for the Central Ontario Wolves organization. “We’re excited to welcome Mason to the Petes,” said Oke. “Being from the area, Mason is a player we’ve been following for several years through his time with the Marlies and the Central Ontario Wolves. Frontenacs add Johnson, Francis to hockey operations staff

The Kingston Frontenacs have announced a pair of additions to their hockey operations staff ahead of the 2026-27 Ontario Hockey League season, naming Colin Johnson as Coordinator of Hockey Operations & Video Coach and Brad Francis as Assistant Equipment Manager. Johnson joins the Frontenacs following two seasons with the Soo Greyhounds, where he served as Video Coach and Director of Analytics while working alongside the club's coaching staff and hockey operations department. He takes over in Kingston following the departure of Ryan Lennon, who has joined the AHL's Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins. Before joining the Greyhounds in 2024, Johnson spent a season scouting NHL Draft-eligible talent with Draft Prospects Hockey while also contributing in hockey operations and video analysis with the NHL's St. Louis Blues. Johnson previously spent the 2022-23 season with the WHL's Prince George Cougars, initially joining the organization as a hockey and business operations intern before moving into a Video Coordinator & Business Executive role. His hockey responsibilities included preparing and clipping game footage for the coaching staff both during and following games. Johnson also spent two years as an independent amateur scout from 2021-23, adding to a background that combines video, analytics and player evaluation. Francis moves into a full-time position with an organization he has been part of since 2017. A Certified Athletic Therapist, Francis spent nearly nine years working with the Frontenacs as a student athletic therapist and equipment assistant, contributing on game days, road trips, at training camps and during practices. His experience also includes time with the Brampton Steelheads as a student athletic therapist during the 2024-25 season, along with a 2025 internship with the NHL's Pittsburgh Penguins that saw him work alongside the club's therapy and equipment staffs during development camp. Francis has additionally worked with Appleby College's varsity prep hockey and senior boys soccer programs, the Halton Hurricanes U15 AAA program, Oakville Crusaders Rugby Club and Sheridan College's women's varsity soccer team. The appointments add to Kingston's hockey operations staff as the club prepares for the 2026-27 campaign. The Frontenacs open their regular season on Thursday, September 17 in Peterborough against the Petes before returning to Slush Puppie Place for their home opener on Sunday, September 20 against the East Division rival Ottawa 67's at 3:05 p.m.

Firebirds sign defenceman Landon Pickersgill

FLINT - The Flint Firebirds have announced that they have signed defenseman Landon Pickersgill to a Standard Player Agreement. Pickersgill was selected by Flint in the seventh round of the 2025 OHL Priority Selection Draft. He played the 2025-26 season for the Leamington Flyers in the OJHL and was the Flyers’ highest-scoring defenseman with 13 goals and 27 assists in 55 games. A Windsor, Ontario native, Pickersgill has a commitment to play NCAA hockey at Lake Superior State University. He is the sixth player from Flint’s 2025 OHL Priority Selection Draft class to sign with the Firebirds. Busy offseason reflects Bulldogs’ long-term vision under Hyman

The Brantford Bulldogs have been one of the Ontario Hockey League's busiest clubs this offseason, completing 16 trades since the trade window opened on June 2 while signing 18 players to OHL Standard Player Agreements since May 6 as General Manager Spencer Hyman continues to reshape a roster that came within one win of reaching the 2026 OHL Championship Series.

Following a season that saw Brantford capture the Hamilton Spectator Trophy as OHL regular season champions before falling to the Barrie Colts in Game 7 of the Eastern Conference Championship Series, the Bulldogs entered the offseason facing significant roster turnover. With much of last season's veteran core moving on, the organization has focused on adding young talent while replenishing draft capital and building a foundation for the years ahead.

Last season's club featured NHL Draft picks and key acquisitions such as Ben Danford, Jett Luchanko, Charlie Paquette, Zack Sandhu and Gabe Frasca. This summer, however, the organization's attention has shifted toward assembling its next core.

Among the departures have been forwards Vladimir Dravecky, Cooper Dennis, Dylan Tsherna, Gavin Christie and Parker Holmes, along with goaltenders David Egorov and Ryerson Leenders.

One of Brantford's most active trade partners has been the Owen Sound Attack, where 32-year-old Hyman and 28-year-old General Manager Tyler Nother have completed two trades since June 2. Across those deals, the Bulldogs acquired defencemen Jet Kwajah and Boston Bruins prospect Cullen McCrate, along with Owen Sound's fifth-round selection in the 2026 OHL Priority Selection, used to select Trent Clow, and Oshawa's fourth-round pick in 2027. Owen Sound received Leenders, defenceman Cameron Merrick, Sarnia's third-round selection in 2028 and Brantford's fourth-round pick in 2030.

Brantford has also added 2025 first overall OHL Priority Selection pick Kaden McGregor, Brayden Lappalainen, Ryan Chamberlain and George Komadoski as part of one of the league's most active offseasons.

Appearing on The Sheet with Jeff Marek on Aug. 6, Hyman said the changing landscape of junior hockey has created new opportunities for Ontario Hockey League clubs willing to adapt. "For every one player we're going to lose... we're gaining 10," Hyman said. "The CHL is the biggest destination for any junior hockey player." With more NCAA-committed players choosing the CHL and an increasing number of American and European prospects considering the league, Hyman believes organizations must remain flexible while continuing to build competitive rosters. "It's a great opportunity every year to build a competitive team," he said. "You try and plan as best as you can. You have a vision for your lineup and what your needs may be, but ultimately there are players that don't really know what their plans are until later in the offseason." One of Brantford's headline acquisitions came earlier this week when the club acquired McCrate, a Boston Bruins draft pick who recorded 30 points with the USHL's Fargo Force last season before being selected in the seventh round of the 2026 NHL Draft. Earlier in the week, the Bulldogs also completed a blockbuster deal with the Peterborough Petes, acquiring McGregor after the 2025 first overall OHL Priority Selection pick produced 20 points in 39 rookie games last season. Hyman described McGregor as "one of the premier young superstars in the entire CHL," believing the 17-year-old is ready to step into a significant role with the Bulldogs this season. While personnel changes have dominated Brantford's offseason, Hyman credits the organization's commitment to player development as the foundation behind every decision. The Bulldogs added Mike Babcock Jr. as head coach earlier this summer and continue to lean on Hockey Hall of Famer Gary Roberts in player development and performance, with longtime NHL executive Brian Burke serving as Senior Advisor of Hockey Operations. "Programs are built through people," Hyman said. "When you have really good people within programs and you empower them to do their job to the best of their ability, that creates a successful environment which allows kids to perform at a high level." As Brantford prepares for a new season with one of the league's youngest rosters, Hyman says the organization's objective remains unchanged. "Everyone in junior hockey is trying to do the same thing," he said. "We're trying to help kids move on to the next level. It's our job to give them the platform and the support they need because they're still kids and they're still growing and developing."

Rangers finalize coaching staff with alumni Spaling, Paterson, promote Zsolt, Flynn and Merli

The Kitchener Rangers have finalized their hockey operations staff for the 2026-27 season, welcoming former players Nick Spaling and Jake Paterson back to the organization while announcing a series of internal promotions following the appointment of Jeff Kyrzakos as the club's 26th head coach. Spaling returns to Kitchener as an assistant coach, completing Kyrzakos' coaching staff after helping the Cambridge RedHawks capture the 2026 Sutherland Cup as an assistant coach. He will work with the Rangers' forward group while overseeing the club's power play. A Rangers alumnus, Spaling played three seasons in Kitchener from 2006-09, helping the club capture the 2008 OHL Championship and reach the Memorial Cup Final while recording 156 regular season points and 30 playoff points. Selected by the Nashville Predators in the second round of the 2007 NHL Draft, the Palmerston, ON native went on to play 437 NHL games with Nashville, Pittsburgh, Toronto and San Jose before finishing his playing career in Switzerland. "Nick is a well-known and popular Rangers alum that understands the history and importance of what this team means to the community," said General Manager Mike McKenzie. "He has a wealth of knowledge from his OHL and NHL playing days that will help our players develop on and off the ice." The Rangers also welcomed former goaltender Jake Paterson back as goaltending coach and video coach. A third-round NHL Draft pick of the Detroit Red Wings in 2012, Paterson played parts of two OHL seasons with Saginaw before joining Kitchener during the 2014-15 campaign, posting a 14-10-2 record with a 2.37 goals-against average, a .929 save percentage and two shutouts in 26 games. He also represented Canada at the 2013 and 2014 IIHF World Junior Championship before playing professionally in the AHL, ECHL and Europe. Most recently, Paterson spent the past two seasons as a goaltending coach in the GOJHL with the Elmira Sugar Kings and Listowel Cyclones while operating his own goaltending development program. "Jake will be a great addition to our organization," said McKenzie. "He understands what it takes and the highs and lows of being a goaltender at this level." The Rangers also announced three internal promotions within their hockey operations department. Michael Zsolt has been promoted to associate general manager after serving as assistant general manager for the past five seasons. Since joining the Rangers as director of analytics in 2017, Zsolt has also served as director of hockey operations and has become an integral part of the club's scouting, player recruitment, player development and team management. He will continue overseeing the organization's analytics department, which has helped produce multiple staff members who have gone on to professional opportunities in the NHL, MLB and NBA. Behind the bench, Brad Flynn has been elevated to associate coach after previously serving as an assistant coach. Petrova, of King City, ON, was acquired on June 23^rd from the Ottawa 67’s has continued to stack standout seasons between the pipes. Originally Ottawa’s 7^th round selection, 133^rd overall, in the 2024 OHL Priority Selection Draft. Selected from the Oshawa Generals U16 AAA program where he posted a 2.14/.906 stat line with 7 shutouts across 44 games while going 3-1 with a 1.26/.936 line at the OHL Cup. Petrova spent the 2024-25 season with the Ajax/Pickering Raiders U18 AAA posting a 1.22 GAA with 5 shutouts and an 18-1-1 record in 20 OMHA league games, with a 1.05 GAA & 4-1 record in 5 playoff contests. Taking another massive step forward, Petrova spent the 2025-26 season with St. Andrews College where he dominated in Prep School competition over 9 appearances with a 2.21/.921 stat line and a 6-1-1 record combined with a 2.41/.910 line across 30 U18 AAA appearances compiling a 20-8-2 record with a shutout, leading St. Andrews College in minutes played between the pipes. Petrova capped his 2025-26 season with three appearances with the Newmarket Hurricanes of the OJHL where he again looked the part of a top netminder. Spirit’s Schmidt added to U.S. roster for Hlinka Gretzky Cup

Saginaw Spirit forward Sawyer Schmidt has been added to the United States roster for the 2026 Hlinka Gretzky Cup ahead of Friday's semifinal against Slovakia in Edmonton, AB. Schmidt joins a U.S. team that advanced to the medal round with a perfect 3-0 record in preliminary play, defeating Czechia, Finland and Germany while outscoring its opponents 18-6. The defending tournament champions will face Slovakia in Friday's semifinal, with the winner advancing to Saturday's gold medal game. The 16-year-old from Buffalo, NY joined the Spirit midway through the 2025-26 season after beginning the year with the Buffalo Jr. Sabres of the OJHL. He recorded 27 points (7-20-27) in 33 games with the Jr. Sabres before signing with Saginaw in January. "We're really pleased with the year Sawyer has had in Jr. A," Spirit General Manager Dave Drinkill said when Schmidt signed with the club. "He's really taken the opportunities he's had and made the most of them, and we anticipate he'll do the same thing here in Saginaw. His offensive vision has developed rapidly, and we feel it's made him an OHL player." Schmidt appeared in 25 regular season games with the Spirit, recording two points (1-1-2), before skating in four playoff contests. Prior to arriving in Saginaw, he also suited up in five games with the U.S. National Team Development Program Under-17 team, scoring once. Originally selected by the Spirit in the seventh round, 135th overall, of the 2025 OHL Priority Selection, Schmidt has represented the New York District at the USA Hockey National Player Development Camps and now receives his first opportunity to compete for the United States at the Hlinka Gretzky Cup. Originally selected by the Attack in the 5th Round (91st overall) of the 2023 Ontario Hockey League Priority Selection, Prud'homme has developed into a hard-nosed, physical forward and now officially joins the Bears Den after spending the 2025-26 season with the Madison Capitols of the United States Hockey League (USHL). During the 2025-26 campaign, the 6-foot-3, 207-pound Ottawa, Ontario native appeared in 49 games with Madison, recording 5 goals and 5 assists for a total of 10 points, while adding 184 penalty minutes and finishing with a +4 rating. Known for his physical presence and tenacity, Prud'homme established himself as one of the USHL’s toughest players while continuing to round out his offensive game. As the 2026-27 OHL season approaches, the Sarnia Sting are preparing to build on last year’s campaign. We spoke with General Manager Dylan Seca about the club’s 2026 draft class and the new faces fans should be watching heading into the upcoming season.

The 6-foot-2 netminder spent the 2025-26 season with the Woodbridge Wolfpack Premier 15’s, where he posted a 1.50 goals-against average and a .891 save percentage across 37 appearances. He was named to the THF 15U All-Tournament Team and will suit up for the Chicago Steel of the USHL in the upcoming season. “Chase is one of the most athletic goaltenders we evaluated in this age group. We know he has interest in playing in our league, and we expect to see him in Sarnia at some point. We believe he has the ability to become a starting goaltender and someone you can win with.” Player Spotlight: Ivan Tkach-Tkachenko Profile: 6’3”, 181lbs, goaltender Hometown: Burlington, NJ Birthdate: May 30, 2007 Drafted: 1st Round, 10th Overall (2026 CHL Import Draft) 2025-26 Stats (Ufa Tolpar): 27 GP, 2.80 GAA, .894 SV% Selected 10th overall in the first round of the 2026 CHL Import Draft, Ivan Tkach-Tkachenko is a native of Chernolesovsky, Russia, who spent the 2025-26 season with Ufa Tolpar of the MHL, posting a 2.80 goals-against average and a .894 save percentage in 27 games. The 6-foot-3, 185-pound left-catching goaltender was also selected by the Utah Mammoth in the fifth round (142nd overall) of the 2025 NHL Draft. “Ivan, a Utah draft pick, brings outstanding size and athleticism. Dunn’s performance throughout the season also earned league-wide recognition. His standout debut campaign earned him a place on the OHL First All-Rookie Team. The right-shot defenceman continued to play a major role during Barrie’s run to the OHL Championship Series, contributing eight assists in 20 playoff games while logging significant minutes in all situations. A strong-skating puck mover, Emerton drew praise throughout his draft year for his offensive instincts and ability to lead the rush from the back end. “Cole was a player we targeted from the start of the offseason.
