OHL set to launch 2013-14 season
A lot has happened across the league since the London Knights hoisted the Robertson Cup in May.
The OHL continued to be a leading supplier of talent to the National Hockey League with 37 OHL players selected in the 2013 NHL Draft including eight players selected in the first round led by Sean Monahan of the Ottawa 67’s chosen sixth overall by the Calgary Flames.
In August, Canada’s National Men’s Summer Under-18 Team won a sixth straight Gold Medal at the Memorial of Ivan Hlinka with eight OHL players in the lineup including captain and top 2014 NHL Draft prospect Aaron Ekblad of the Barrie Colts.
The league’s 49-game Exhibition Schedule prepared clubs for the competition of the regular season with the Colts and Kingston Frontenacs leading the way with perfect 5-0 records.
And many of the league’s top players have had the opportunity to pursue their NHL dreams with 166 returning-eligible players attending NHL Training Camps this month.
As the season progresses, the league’s Special Events calendar takes shape with a pair of SUBWAY Super Series games with Team OHL facing Team Russia on Thursday November 21 in Oshawa and on Monday November 25 in Sudbury.
The next wave of OHL stars reach their peak at the 2014 OHL Cup which takes places March 11-16 in Mississauga in advance of the Priority Selection on Saturday April 5, and followed by the second annual OHL Gold Cup May 7-11.
And finally, the season culminates with the 2014 MasterCard Memorial Cup May 15-25 in London hosted by the Knights who square off against the champions from the OHL, the Western Hockey League, and the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League.
But before then, 20 OHL clubs will compete in 680 hard fought regular season games beginning Thursday September 19 – catch all of the action online this season with OHL Livestream.
Best of luck to all student athletes and teams this season!
