OHL Playoff Roundup: Thursday
The 2010 OHL Playoffs continued Thursday night with the Kitchener Rangers and Ottawa 67’s each taking 3-2 series leads:
Kitchener Rangers 8 London Knights 4
The Kitchener Rangers scored eight goals for the second straight time defeating the London Knights 8-4 on the road in Game 5 before a John Labatt Centre crowd of 8,910. Game 6 takes place Saturday night in Kitchener at 7:00 pm.
The Rangers’ overtime hero from Game 4 Jason Akeson delivered four points scoring two goals including the game-winner and two assists as first star of the game. Chris Mackinnon had three points including two goals and one assist while rookie forward Gabriel Landeskog scored twice on the power play. Jared Knight scored his eighth goal of the playoffs at 7:40 of the first period to tie the game 1-1 before the Rangers pulled ahead with three unanswered goals. Justin Taylor was named third star of the game with a goal and an assist.
Brandon Maxwell got the win in goal making 25 saves. Rookie Michael Houser got the start for the Knights and allowed three goals on eight shots before giving way to Michael Hutchinson midway through the first period where he would allow five goals on 28 shots.
Ottawa 67’s 6 Mississauga St. Michael’s Majors 3
Corey Cowick scored twice including the game-winner to lead the Ottawa 67’s to a 6-3 win over the Mississauga St. Michael’s Majors in Game 5 action before an Urbandale Centre crowd of 5,061. Game 6 heads back to Mississauga Saturday afternoon at 4:00 pm.
The trio of Cowick, Anthony Nigro, and Andrew Merrett connected on the game-tying, game-winning, and insurance goal for the 67’s. Cowick’s winner at 4:12 of the third period was the first of three 67’s goals in the final frame and capped off his three-point night as first star of the contest. Nigro also had three points scoring the insurance goal and two assists, with Merrett assisting on the winner and insurance goal as the game’s second star. The Majors used up all of their offense in the first 20 minutes scoring three goals to escape the first period with a 3-2 lead. Devante Smith-Pelly, Gregg Sutch, and Kelly Geoffrey all scored despite the loss.
The 67’s outshot the Majors 43-40 with 67’s rookie goaltender Petr Mrazek earning his third win of the series with 37 saves as third star of the game. JP Anderson made his second straight start and took the loss with 37 saves.
