Ottawa 67’s 5 Niagara IceDogs 1

Corey Cowick scored four goals as first star for the Ottawa 67’s who defeated the Niagara IceDogs 5-1 Sunday afternoon at Scotiabank Place in Ottawa to wrap up their opening round playoff series in five games.  The 67’s will now play the Mississauga St. Michael’s Majors with a full series schedule below.

Tyler Toffoli opened the scoring for the 67’s with his fifth goal of the series scored at 5:09 of the first before Cowick got his first of four goals at 8:15 on the power play which held as the game-winner.  He scored again at 16:23 of the second period and added two empty-net goals in the third period to finish off the IceDogs.  Marco Insam scored the lone goal for the IceDogs, with rookie defenceman Dougi Hamilton grabbing third star honours.

67’s rookie goaltender Petr Mrazek was named second star of the game earning his first win of the series with 31 saves.  Mark Visentin took the loss with 28 saves.

Game Summary

Kitchener Rangers 4 Saginaw Spirit 2

The Kitchener Rangers scored three goals in the first period en route to a 4-2 win over the Saginaw Spirit to close out the first round series in six games with the series finale played Sunday evening before a crowd of 2,452 at the Dow Event Centre in Saginaw.  The Rangers will now play the London Knights with a full series schedule below.

The Rangers were in early control with goals by Marty Sartoretto, Jeff Skinner, and a late goal by Julian Cimadamore with just three seconds to play in the first period.  Just like in game five, the home team fought back and made for a close finish with the Spirit rallying for two goals when Ryan O’Connor and third star of the game Jordan Hill scored 1:11 apart late in the third period to give the Spirit some life.  Rangers captain Dan Kelly ended the threat scoring an empty-net goal in the final seconds to put the game away and was named first star of the contest.

Brandon Maxwell was named second star of the game making 31 saves to earn the win in goal for the Rangers.  Edward Pasquale played well all series and made 36 saves the game six loss.

Game Summary

Kingston Frontenacs 2 Brampton Battalion 1

The Kingston Frontenacs fought back to win game six of the series 2-1 over the Brampton Battalion before a Powerade Centre crowd of 2,225 forcing a game seven back in Kingston where the series will be decided Tuesday night at the K-Rock Centre with a 7:00 pm puck-drop.  The winner of this series will play the Barrie Colts in the second round with a full series schedule below.

Frontenacs defenceman Taylor Doherty tied the game at 8:31 of the second period before second star of the game Erik Gudbranson scored the game-winner at 18:35 of the second period to give the Fronts the win.  Sean Jones scored the lone goal for the Battalion with his third of the series scored on the power play at 10:43 of the first period.
