OHL Playoff Roundup: Sunday
Here are the results from Sunday’s OHL Playoff action:
Mississauga St. Michael’s Majors 3 vs. Sudbury Wolves 2
Trailing 2-0 late in the second period the Mississauga St. Michael’s Majors scored three unanswered goals to earn the 3-2 win over the Sudbury Wolves to take a 2-0 series lead in the second round series.
Mika Partanen buried his second of the playoffs and the game-winner from the slot at 14:58 of the third period to complete the comeback.
Alain Valiquette earned first star honours with a very busy night in goal for the Wolves making 60 saves.
Justin Shugg put the Majors on the board when he tricked Valiquette from an impossible angle at 16:59 of the second period with his third of the playoffs. The Majors tied the game in the third period at 9:44 on the power play when Stuart Percy stepped into a slapshot and blasted home his first of the playoffs.
After a scoreless first period, the Wolves’ pleased the more than 4,500 Sudbury Community Arena fans in attendance when captain Marcus Foligno scored his first of the playoffs just 23 seconds into the middle frame on the power play. Third star Eric O’Dell his fifth of the playoffs at 15:42 of the second with a shorthanded marker.
JP Anderson grabbed his sixth straight win of the playoffs with 22 saves.
Game three of the series will be played Tuesday night in Mississauga.
Saginaw Spirit 5 vs. Windsor Spitfires 4 OT
Josh Shalla scored the overtime winner with his sixth of the playoffs at 2:13 of the extra frame to lead the Saginaw Spirit to a 5-4 win over the Windsor Spitfires tying the second round series 1-1.
The Spirit overcame a 4-2 deficit midway through the second period and scored three straight goals to grab the win. Garrett Ross netted his first of the playoffs for the Spirit at 12:51 of the second period to cut the Spitfires lead to 4-3 before Brandon Saad collected a rebound and scored to tie the game at 9:28 of the third period.
Shalla, who was named the game’s first star, scored from in close after picking up a rebound through traffic off a sharp angle shot from Ross.
The Spitfires controlled the play early on scoring twice in the opening five minutes of play. Stephen Johnston got his sixth of the playoffs at 1:13 before second star Tom Kuhnhackl also grabbed his sixth goal and first of two in the contest at 4:32. The Spirit responded scoring on their first shot on goal off the stick of John McFarland at 5:48 for his fourth of the playoffs. McFarland then setup third star Ben Chiarot at 16:55 on the power play which tied the game 2-2 heading into the break.
Jake Carrick rounded out the scoring for the Spitfires at 7:25 of the second period with his fifth of the playoffs. Captain Ryan Ellis and Alex Khokhlachev each finished the game with two assists.
Mavric Parks made 29 saves to earn the win, with Jack Campbell also stopping 29 shots despite the loss.
Game three of the series shifts back to Saginaw on Tuesday night.
