OHL Playoff Roundup: Monday
The second round of the 2010 OHL Playoffs wrapped up Monday night with two Game 7’s that featured the visiting team winning both games:
Mississauga St. Michael’s Majors 5 Ottawa 67’s 3
Devante Smith-Pelly scored the game-winner at 8:41 of the third period to lead the Mississauga St. Michael’s Majors to a 5-3 Game 7 win over the Ottawa 67’s.
The Majors opened the scoring with two goals in the first period from Jordan Mayer at 9:16 and Kelly Geoffrey at 17:14 to take a 2-0 lead after 20 minutes of play. The 67’s came back strong with second period goals by Cody Lindsay at 1:45 and second star Thomas Nesbitt at 5:36 to tie the game 2-2 heading into the third. First star of the game Gregg Sutch scored the go-ahead goal to put the Majors back on top at 2:13 before Smith-Pelly’s winner. Ryan Martindale brought the home team back to within one when he scored at 16:39 to make it 4-3 until third star of the game Casey Cizikas sealed the win with a goal at 18:32.
The Majors outshot the 67’s 34-19 with JP Anderson getting the win in goal with 16 saves. Petr Mrazek took the loss with 29 saves.
The Majors will now take on the Barrie Colts in the Rogers Eastern Conference Championship Series beginning Wednesday night at 7:30 pm in Barrie.
Kitchener Rangers 8 London Knights 3
Jeremy Morin scored a hat-trick as first star of the game to lead the Kitchener Rangers to an 8-3 Game 7 win over the London Knights.
After trailing 1-0 in the first period, the Rangers rallied to score five unanswered goals in the second period including shorthanded goals by Julian Cimadamore and second star Gabriel Landeskog who finished the game with three points. Jason Akeson scored the game-winner at 6:25 of the second period with his fifth of the playoffs. Chris MacKinnon and Jeff Skinner each recorded three assists for the Rangers, while Daniel Erlich finished a strong post-season scoring his ninth goal and added an assist as third star of the game for the Knights.
The Rangers outshot the Knights 47-23 with Brandon Maxwell earning the win in goal for the Rangers with 20 saves. Michael Hutchinson took the loss allowing five goals on 20 shots before Michael Houser entered the game and made 24 saves.
The Rangers advance to the Rogers Western Conference Championship Series where they will face the Windsor Spitfires beginning Thursday night at 7:00 pm.
