OHL Cup Results – Day 4
Vaughn Kings 5, Cumberland Barons 0
Steven Zoffranieri picked up the shutout to lead the Vaughn Kings to a 5-0 win over the Cumberland Barons in the first game on Day three of the OHL Showcase Tournament.
Philip Varone led the scoring attack for the Kings with two goals, including a shorthanded marker.
Shea Morrison also picked up a shorthanded goal while adding an assist for Vaughn.
Brandon Burlon got the scoring started for Vaughn in the first period. Anthony Berardi also scored in the contest and Michael McInerney picked up two assists in the game.
Plymouth Compuware 4, Richmond Hill Stars 3
Doug Beck Scored his second goal of the game thirty-seven seconds into overtime to give Plymouth Compuware a 4-3 come from behind win over the Richmond Hill Stars. Compuware trailed 2-0 going into the third period but were able to fight back and pick up the victory.
Shawn Szydlowski pitched in with a goal and two assists in the victory for Compuware.
Michael Merrifield also added a goal for Compuware while Kent Daavettila pitched in with two assists.
Carl Pollock led the charge for Richmond Hill scoring two goals in the contest.
Robert Mignardi added a single goal for the stars and Ryan Williamson contributed with two assists.
Don Mills Flyers 5, Brantford 99ers 1
Luke Krznaric started and finished the scoring for the Don Mills Flyers as they defeated the Brantford 99ers 5-1. Krznaric also added an assist in the contest.
The win gives the Flyers an undefeated record of 3-0 in the round robin portion of the tournament.
Anthony Nigro scored a goal and had two points for Don Mills and J.K. Gill had two assists in the game.
Adam Henrique scored an unassisted goal for Brantford.
Peter Di Salvo got the victory in net for Don Mills.
Toronto Jr. Canadians 2, Ottawa Valley Titans 1
Seconds after being stopped on a penalty shot, the Jr. Canadians were able to score the overtime winner to end what was a thrilling contest. The win propels them into the semi- finals of the OHL Cup Showcase Tournament to be held Sunday at Herbert Carnegie Arena.
Michael D’Orazio netted the winner on the powerplay after being set up by Alex Piettrangelo and Chris DeSousa. It was Piettrangelo’s second helper of the game.
Justin Soave netted the victory for the Canadians.
Derek Takeuchi connected with a goal to contribute to the Canadians victory. Matthew MacDougall closed out his tournament by scoring the lone goal for the Valley Titans.
Toronto Red Wings 3, Thunder Bay Kings 2
Kane Allicock led the Toronto Red Wings to a 3- 2 victory over the Thunder Bay Kings scoring 1 goal and adding an assist.
Jesse Hebsher scored the game winner for the GTHL squad at 4:57 of the 3rd period.
Michael Colavecchia also pitched in with two assists for Toronto.
Edward Pasquale was steady in net for the Red Wings to record the victory.
Kale Kerbashian and Stephen Raynak replied for the Thunder Bay Kings.
Mississauga IceDogs 4, Quinte Red Devils 2
Matthew Sisca scored two goals including the game winner to lead the Mississauga IceDogs to a 4-2 victory over the Quinte Red Devils.
Adding to the IceDogs victory with one goal each were Michael Perry and Marc Rubino, while Marco Franchini pitched in with two helpers.
Zach Blake and Ryan Mills countered with a goal each for the Red Devils.
Liam Raymont was steady in goal to pick up the win goal for the IceDogs.
London Jr. Knights 3, Great North All-Stars 2
London and the NOHA All-Stars had a spirited battle as both teams were playing in their final game of the 2006 OHL Cup Showcase Tournament.
With the Knights leading 2-1 courtesy of goals by Nazem Kadri and Dominic DeSando, the All-Stars tied the game with 1:43 remaining in the third period on a goal by Jeff Verreault.
That set the stage for some late game heroics by Dominic DeSando who scored his second goal of the game with only seventeen seconds remaining to give London a 3-2 win over the Great North.
Alex Fiset also notched a goal for the Great North All-Stars and Jamie Commerford assisted on two of the three London goals.
Markham Waxers 2, Toronto Marlboros 0
Entering the final game of the round robin portion of the 2006 OHL Cup Showcase Tournament there was still one spot up for grabs in the semi-finals on Sunday. The Markham Waxers won that final spot in a hard fought 2-0 win over the Toronto Marlboros.
The shutout was the second in three games for the Waxers as they gave up only three goals through the entire round robin portion of the tournament.
Matthew Malone scored the game winning goal early in the third period on a set up from Kelly Geoffrey and Steven Stamkos.
Cameron Gaunce added an unassisted insurance goal with 3:48 remaining in the game.
Markham moves on to play the Toronto Jr. Canadians in the second semi-final of the day on Sunday morning.
