OHL Alumni on Opening Day NHL Rosters

Toronto, ON – The Ontario Hockey League is proud to announce that 197 OHL alumni are listed on National Hockey League opening day rosters representing over 25% of all players in the league to start the 2014-15 season.
Among the 197 graduates from the OHL are players who competed in the league last season including 2014 NHL Draft first overall pick Aaron Ekblad of the Barrie Colts who will begin the season with the Florida Panthers. From the 2013 NHL Draft class, seventh overall pick Darnell Nurse of the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds will begin the season with the Edmonton Oilers, Nikita Zadorov of the London Knights will begin the season with the Buffalo Sabres, and fellow first round pick Andre Burakovsky of the Erie Otters will compete with the Washington Capitals. Slater Koekkoek of the Windsor Spitfires (Tampa Bay Lightning), and the Knights’ Chris Tierney (San Jose Sharks) were also named to opening day NHL rosters and would be eligible to return as OHL overage players.
Additionally, several OHL eligible players were listed on NHL rosters as injured players including Nick Baptiste (Sudbury/Buffalo), Sam Bennett (Kingston/Calgary), Connor Crisp (Sudbury/Montreal), Bo Horvat (London/Vancouver), Michael McCarron (London/Montreal), Sonny Milano (Plymouth/Columbus). Barclay Goodrow, who played last season with the North Bay Battalion as an overage player, was named to the Sharks’ opening day roster but is also injured.
The London Knights lead the way with 23 graduates on opening day NHL rosters, followed by the Kitchener Rangers with 22, and the Plymouth Whalers with 18.
All 30 NHL teams have at least one former OHL player on their opening day roster. The defending Stanley Cup champion Los Angeles Kings lead the league with 12 former OHL players, followed by the Buffalo Sabres and Carolina Hurricanes with 11 each.
The OHL continues to be leading suppliers of talent to the NHL.
