Monday Highlights: Troops turn it around

The North Bay Battalion continued on the right track Monday afternoon, giving the ‘seventh man’ a positive end to the Thanksgiving Weekend with a 5-3 win over the Mississauga Steelheads.
Zach Bratina led the attack with his first OHL hat-trick as the Troops won their third straight to overcome an 0-3 start to the season in one of four games around the league.
NORTH BAY 5 MISSISSAUGA 3 – The Mississauga Steelheads pulled themselves to within one, but Zach Bratina’s hat-trick goal into the empty net sealed the deal on a 5-3 Battalion victory for their third straight win. Goaltender Jake Smith made 33 saves while defencemen Austin Kosack and Miles Liberati also pitched in with goals. The Battalion have overcome an 0-3 start to pull themselves back up to .500 in the standings.

KITCHENER 8 SUDBURY 2 – Rookie Greg Meireles had a whale of a game as the Kitchener Rangers defeated Sudbury 8-2. Meireles scored twice and added three assists in just his third OHL contest as the Rangers overcame a pair of overtime losses earlier this weekend to get two points. Sophomore forward Connor Bunnaman had two goals of his own while both Adam Mascherin and Mason Kohn registered a goal and an assist. Rookies Dmitry Sokolov and Ben Garagan, who scored his first career OHL goal, tallied for Sudbury.

LONDON 8 HAMILTON 6 – The London Knights and Hamilton Bulldogs combined for 14 goals in a Thanksgiving shooting gallery at FirstOntario Centre on Monday. The Knights jumped out to a 5-1 lead after 20 minutes before the Bulldogs clawed back for three in the second. The Knights won the third period 3-2 to secure an 8-6 victory as seven different players found the back of the net. Winger J.J. Piccinich led the way with two goals and an assist while rookie Robert Thomas scored his first OHL goal. Veterans Mitch Marner (0-3–3) and Christian Dvorak (1-2–3) had three points each. Hamilton forward Trent Fox was a standout in the loss, scoring three goals and an assist while recently acquired blueliner Ben Gleason scored his first OHL goal against his old London mates.

OSHAWA 2 GUELPH 0 – Oshawa goaltender Jeremy Brodeur recorded his league-leading fourth shutout of the year, making 24 saves in a 2-0 win over the Guelph Storm. Sophomore winger Kenny Huether led the way with a goal and an assist to go with 11 shots on goal while blueliner Stephen Desrocher also tallied for the Generals. Justin Nichols was steady in the Guelph crease, allowing just one goal on 31 shots in the loss.
