ROUND 1

Shane Wright heads to the Pacific Northwest, joining the Seattle Kraken as the fourth overall pick of the 2022 NHL Draft. A former OHL and CHL Rookie of the Year, Wright heard his name called by another former fourth overall NHL Draft pick in Soo Greyhounds alumnus Ron Francis who serves as GM of the Kraken. Wright was voted as an OHL Third Team All-Star in 2021-22. He was a gold medalist with Canada’s National Under-18 Team at the 2021 IIHF World Under-18 Hockey Championship in Frisco, Texas. Wright joins a Kingston native in Soo Greyhounds graduate Tye Kartye as well as Hamilton Bulldogs winger Ryan Winterton on the Seattle depth chart.

Pavel Mintyukov is headed to sunny California, being selected by the Anaheim Ducks with the 10th overall pick. The 6-foot-2 blueliner became the first defenceman to ever lead the Saginaw Spirit in scoring this past season, and was a voted an OHL Third Team All-Star as a result. Mintyukov, who enjoys playing chess, matches Cole Perfetti as the highest chosen player in Spirit history. Perfetti was taken 10th overall by the Winnipeg Jets in the 2020 NHL Draft. The Ducks have chosen four OHL players in the first round of the past three NHL Drafts, taking Mason McTavish (3rd, 2021), Jamie Drysdale (6th, 2020) and Jacob Perreault (27th, 2020) in recent years.

ROUND 2

The Montreal Canadiens started Day 2 of the 2022 NHL Draft off with a bang, selectiong OHL and CHL Scholastic Player of the Year Owen Beck at 33rd overall. The Mississauga Steelheads centreman was among the OHL’s top faceoff performers in his rookie season, putting up 51 points to be voted to the League’s Second All-Rookie Team.

Paul Ludwinski impressed in the 2022 OHL Playoffs, putting up seven goals and 12 points in 11 contests. The Chicago Blackhawks apparently took notice, selecting the Kingston Frontenacs centre with the 39th overall pick. Ludwinski is the second Frontenacs player selected, following teammate Shane Wright who was chosen fourth overall by the Seattle Kraken.

His name is pretty flashy, and so is he. Luca Del Bel Belluz emerges as the second Mississauga Steelheads forward chosen in the second round, going 44th overall to the Columbus Blue Jackets. Del Bel Belluz scored 30 goals in his second OHL campaign, racking up 76 points in 68 games, an impressive 70-point improvement on his rookie mark in 2018-19. Del Bel Belluz joins Steelheads teammate Ole Bjorgvik-Holm in the Columbus organization.

The Minnesota Wild love their speed, and Hunter Haight has no shortage of that as the Barrie Colts centre heads to the Land of 10,000 Lakes at 47th overall. Haight, who was Barrie’s ninth overall selection in the 2020 OHL Priority Selection, continues to develop nicely under head coach and GM Marty Williamson in Barrie. The pride of Strathroy, Ont. looks up to mentor Travis Konecny, who patrols the wing with the Philadelphia Flyers.

The first Saginaw Spirit player ever chosen by the Vegas Golden Knights is big Czech centreman Matyas Sapovaliv. He follows fellow Spirit CHL Import Draft selection Pavel Mintyukov (10th overall, Anaheim) in Montreal. Sapovaliv played alongside NHL legend Jaromir Jagr during the 2020-21 season in his hometown of Kladno.

Among the League’s most impressive young blueliners, Christian Kyrou of the Erie Otters is headed to the Lonestar State, taken 50th overall by the Dallas Stars. The Stars, who have had success with recent OHL prospects in Wyatt Johnston and Ty Dellandrea, draw from an Otters program that has produced another talented young defenceman in Jamie Drysdale in recent years. Kyrou, who is the younger brother of OHL alumnus and St. Louis Blues forward Jordan Kyrou, racked up 60 points in 68 games this past season.

Matthew Poitras is the first of what’s anticipated to be a number of Guelph Storm names off the board at the 2022 NHL Draft. The Boston Bruins selected the highly intelligent forward from Brooklin, Ont. with the 54th overall selection. Poitras, who enjoys lacrosse, was Guelph’s top academic performer in 2021-22.

The OHL’s top-scoring rookie in 2021-22 is joining Shane Wright in Seattle. Sudbury Wolves star David Goyette was picked by the Kraken with the 61st overall selection following a 33-goal and 70-point campaign. The Hawkesbury, Ont. native was the Eastern Conference finalist for the 2022 OHL Rookie of the Year Award.

ROUND 3

Helping the Flint Firebirds reach the Western Conference Championship Series for the first time in their history, first-year winger Gavin Hayes has been rewarded for a strong rookie season by being selected 66th overall by the Chicago Blackhawks. Hayes, whose older brother Avery was an OHL champion with the Hamilton Bulldogs, grew considerably over the course of the 2021-22 season and ended up with 19 goals and 30 assists on the campaign.

The Seattle Kraken have been watching the Ontario Hockey League closely, apparently. Former first overall OHL Priority Selection choice Ty Nelson joins Shane Wright and David Goyette in the Emerald City, taken 68th overall by the Kraken. Nelson showed off a heavy shot from the point and found ways to contribute all over the ice for the Central Division champion Battalion in 2021-22.

The Montreal Canadiens didn’t have to go far to see Vinzenz Rohrer this past season, and they apparently liked what they saw. The latest Austrian talent to come out of Ottawa goes 75th overall to Montreal following a 25-goal campaign.

Danny Zhilkin earns his wings, joining the Winnipeg Jets in the third round. Zhilkin built on his rookie campaign in Guelph, tacking on 40 points to finish with 55 in his sophomore OHL season. He led the Storm with five game winning goals in 2021-22.

The winner of the OHL’s Jim Mahon Trophy presented to the League’s top scoring right winger, Lucas Edmonds joins the Tampa Bay Lightning after a 113-point campaign in Kingston. A rare overage rookie this past season, Edmonds’ development path has taken him to Sweden and back as he’ll now join a perennial contender in Tampa Bay, jumping right into the pro game next season.

The third Guelph Storm player chosen in Montreal, Michael Buchinger joins the St. Louis Blues depth chart after a 44-point season in Guelph. Buchinger was voted to the OHL’s First All-Star Team in 2021-22, helping a young Storm club exceed expectations in a tough Midwest Division.

Often referred to as B.M.B., Bryce McConnell-Barker is headed to the Big Apple, closing out the third round as the 97th overall pick to the New York Rangers. McConnell-Barker is the latest big name to come out of London, Ont. and turned in a solid rookie season in Sault Ste. Marie with 49 points in 68 games.

ROUND 4

A New York selection, this time on Long Island, opens up the fourth round as the Isles take London Knights blueliner Isaiah George 98th overall. The Oakville, Ont. native is the first London Knights player selected in the 2022 NHL Draft.

Originally a 13th round pick in the 2019 OHL Priority Selection, Amadeus Lombardi has emerged as an important part of the Flint Firebirds’ success. Lombardi helped the Birds go deep in the 2022 OHL Playoffs and was a reliable guy down the middle for coach Ted Dent. Lombardi will be able to develop close to his new NHL club, the Detroit Red Wings, who chose him 113th overall.

An OHL Under-18 Priority Selection success story, Hamilton Bulldogs defender Gavin White is a fourth round pick of the Dallas Stars. The 19-year-old from Brockville, Ont. played a big part in Hamilton’s OHL championship success this past month, playing in an elevated role in the absence of injured teammate Nathan Staios at points throughout the postseason.

Tucker Robertson of the Peterborough Petes becomes the fourth OHL player to hear his name called by the Seattle Kraken in the 2022 NHL Draft. Robertson, who scored 41 goals for Peterborough and was a force in the faceoff circle this past season, joins Shane Wright, David Goyette and Ty Nelson in heading to the NHL’s newest franchise.

A 30-goal scorer in his rookie season who set a new point record for an Owen Sound Attack 16 or 17-year-old rookie, Cedrick Guindon was picked by the Montreal Canadiens in the fourth round, 127th overall. Guindon, who flew under the radar a little bit this past season and wasn’t selected to play in the Kubota CHL/NHL Top Prospects Game, certainly caught the attention of Montreal and is rewarded for his hard work this past season.

ROUND 5

Hamilton Bulldogs defenceman Jorian Donovan joins the Ottawa Senators in the fifth round. Donovan, whose father Shaun played for the Senators and currently works in player development with the club, earned valuable playoff experience as a member of the OHL champion Bulldogs in his rookie season.

A big, physical defenceman for the North Bay Battalion, Tnias Mathurin is now a member of the Detroit Red Wings organization. Mathurin excelled in a shutdown role for the Troops, helping them win a Central Division title and make an appearance in the Eastern Conference Championship Series.

Matthew Maggio stuck with it and is rewarded as an NHL Draft pick following his 19-year-old season. The Windsor Spitfires winger turned it on in 2021-22, scoring 38 goals for 85 points as the Spitfires won a Western Conference title. The Tecumseh, Ont. native is an overage candidate for next season, but time will tell what the New York Islanders decide to do with the next phase in his development.

Guelph native Jake Karabela becomes the fourth Storm player chosen on Friday in Montreal, going 149th overall to the Washington Capitals. The first Storm player selected by Washington since Charlie Stephens all the way back in 1999, Karabela had a part to play in Guelph’s youth movement this past season, helping the Storm hit 80 points in the standings with 45 points to his credit.

6-foot-3, 192Ib. Sudbury Wolves defender Nolan Collins is a sixth round pick of the Pittsburgh Penguins. Collins, from Whitby, Ont., represented Canada at the 2022 IIHF World Under-18 Hockey Championship.

The son of former OHL and NHL forward Jon Sim, Landon Sim is one step closer to realizing his dream having been selected in the sixth round by the St. Louis Blues. The Nova Scotia native scored 12 goals in his rookie season with the London Knights and caught St. Louis’ attention with his tenacious game on the wing.

It’s been a highly successful draft for players out of Slovakia, and you can add another to the list in Owen Sound Attack forward Servac Petrovsky. Petrovsky was one of a few impressive Owen Sound Attack rookies, scoring 28 goals in 65 games in his first OHL campaign. He joins the Minnesota Wild at 185th overall.

ROUND 7

Kyle Jackson missed some time to injury, but when he was in the lineup this past season, he was dynamite. The 19-year-old racked up 30 goals and 62 points in just 45 games and helped the Battalion down the stretch as they reached the Eastern Conference Championship Series. Make that five OHL players selected by the Seattle Kraken in 2022.

London Knights blueliner Jackson Edward joins the Boston Bruins with the 200th overall pick. A 6-foot-2, 187Ib. rearguard, Edward was originally a 22nd overall pick in the OHL Priority Selection and will see his ice time and responsibilities increase in the 2022-23 season, something to keep an eye on for Bruins fans out there.

The OHL’s F.W. Dinty Moore Trophy recipient for lowest goals-against average by a rookie goaltender, Dom DiVincentiis is an NHL prospect. The Winnipeg Jets swooped in and took the promising young Battalion goaltender at 207th overall after he saw duty for North Bay in the 2022 OHL Playoffs. DiVincentiis was a member of the OHL’s Second All-Rookie Team in 2021-22.

The Vancouver Canucks liked what they saw from Kirill Kudryavtsev of the Soo Greyhounds this season. The blueliner efficiently put up 39 points in 68 games, seeing minutes in a variety of situations under head coach John Dean.

The fifth North Bay Battalion player chosen in the 2022 NHL Draft, captain Liam Arnsby is headed to sunny Florida as the Panthers nabbed him at 214th overall. Highly regarded as a hard worker and valuable penalty killer in North Bay, Arnsby injects some more character into the Panthers depth chart as he led the Battalion to a Central Division title in 2021-22.

Though he missed the season due to injury, big 6-foot-7 Owen Sound Attack winger Kaleb Lawrence managed to draw some attention in the seventh round, going 215th overall to the Los Angeles Kings. Originally a second round pick by the Attack in the 2019 OHL Priority Selection, Lawrence looks to get back going with an Attack club that looks to be a contender in 2022-23.
