Kootenay Wins 2002 MasterCard Memorial Cup
Guelph – Colin Sinclair scored two goals, including the game-winner, to help the Kootenay Ice coast to a 6-3 win over the Victoriaville Tigre in the final game of the 2002 MasterCard Memorial Cup.
The Ice, who beat the Red Deer Rebels to win the Western Hockey League championship, scored twice in each period. The Tigres, who were playing their fourth game in the past five days, mustered just two shots on goal in the third period, but managed to score on both of them to bring the score to within three in the final minutes of the game.
Tigres’ defenceman Danny Groulx, who scored twice and assisted on five others in six games, was named the tournament MVP. Erie Otters’ goaltender T.J. Aceti was named the top goaltender and Ice forward Tomas Plihal was the most sportsmanlike player. Matthew Lombardi, with two goals and eight assists for 10 points was the top scorer of the tournament.
