Inside the CHL Features Robison, Courteau
Edition Number 9 of Inside the CHL will be available at the official website
of the Canadian Hockey League, www.chl.ca, on late Friday afternoon.
This edition features two of the CHL’s vice-presidents, Ron Robison,
commissioner of the Western Hockey League, and Gilles Courteau, commissioner
of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League.
The two commissioners talk about future plans for when their leagues host
the MasterCard Memorial Cup, the attendance growth in both of their leagues
this season and plans for future expansion, among other issues.
Inside the CHL is produced by the CHL and posted on the CHL’s website every
two weeks, with previous shows also available. Inside the CHL, an audio
program, is produced by Aaron Bell and hosted by Roger Lajoie. The next
edition of the show after Friday will be available March 22 and the final
show of this season is April 19.
Inside the CHL is also heard on junior hockey radio broadcasts as an
intermission feature across the country.
WESTERN HOCKEY LEAGUE
There are six games in the WHL on Friday night. Portland plays in Kelowna,
Kootenay is in Spokane, Vancouver plays at Seattle, Regina (7) is in Brandon
(9) in a game featuring two of the CHL’s Top 10 ranked teams, Calgary visits
Prince George and Swift Current (6) visits Red Deer (1) in another match-up
of two of the CHL’s top ranked teams.
There are no games in the WHL on Thursday night.
ONTARIO HOCKEY LEAGUE
There are seven games on the Friday night OHL schedule. Owen Sound plays at
Barrie, Peterborough is at Kingston, Erie plays in Kitchener, Sault Ste.
Marie (5) travels to London, Mississauga is at Ottawa, North Bay visits
Sudbury and Oshawa plays at Toronto St. Michael’s Majors (10).
There were three games in the OHL on Wednesday night. Plymouth (2) beat
Sarnia 5-2, Peterborough got by Barrie 3-2 and Windsor stopped Sault Ste.
Marie 4-3.
At Sarnia, Brad Yeo scored a pair of goals to give the Whalers the victory.
Damian Surma added one goal and one assist to the winners attack while James
Wisniewski and Stephen Weiss both had two assists. Juris Stals had one goal
and one assist for the Sting.
At Peterborough, Greg Chambers scored the game-winning goal in the third
period and added an assist to lead the Petes. Jamie Tardif also had one goal
and one assist for the winners while David Chant did his best to keep the
Colts in the game, making 29 saves.
At Windsor, the Spitfires scored four unanswered goals in the second period
to record the win. Mike James scored twice for the winners while Tim Gleason
added one goal and one assist. Rob Hisey had two assists for the Greyhounds.
QUEBEC MAJOR JUNIOR HOCKEY LEAGUE
There are six games in the QMJHL Thursday night. Rimouski is at Moncton,
Baie-Comeau travels to Cape Breton, Quebec plays at Hull, Montreal visits
Drummondville, Shawinigan (4) is in Val-d’Or and Acadie-Bathurst (3) takes
on Victoriaville.
There were four games in the QMJHL on Thursday night. Baie-Comeau upset
Halifax (8) 5-3, Montreal edged Quebec 2-1, Cape Breton stopped Rimouski 7-2
and Rouyn-Noranda defeated Shawinigan (4) 4-1.
At Halifax, Yanick Lehoux had two goals and one assist for the Drakkar while
Charles Linglet and Benoit Mondou both had one goal and two assists.
Ghyslain Rousseau made 31 saves in goal for the winners before a crowd of
7,54 in Halifax.
At Montreal, Jerome Bergeron and Fabien Laniel scored for the Rocket in the
win. Mario Joly had the lone goal for Quebec while Pascal Leclaire made 29
saves in goal for the winners.
At Cape Breton, Dominic Noel had one goal and three assists for the
Screaming Eagles while Stuart McRae added three assists and Andre Martineau
scored a pair of goals. Seneque Hyacinthe scored his 25th goal of the season
for the losers.
At Rouyn-Noranda, Benoit Genesse had one goal and two assists for the
winners while Jonathan Gagnon added one goal and one assist. Armands Berzins
scored the lone goal on Huskies goalie Mathieu Poitras, who made 36 saves.
