Greyhounds name Blake Speers captain

Sault Ste. Marie, ON – The Soo Greyhounds Hockey Club announced this morning that Blake Speers will serve as their captain for the 2015-16 season.

A native of Sault Ste. Marie ON, Speers has served as one of the club’s alternates through the opening portion of the season leading into today’s announcement. He follows in a long line of Sault Ste. Marie natives to captain their hometown club, with the most recent representative being Colin Miller in 2012-13.

“Over the last few weeks we have seen our young leadership group take big steps on and off the ice,” said Greyhounds head coach Drew Bannister. “Blake has been one of those leaders in the group that we feel will lead our team in the right direction in the future with the support of the other captains in the room.” 

Speers is in his third season with the Hounds and currently leads the team offensively with 5 goals and 14 assists, good for 19 points, while currently holding a five-game point streak. Last week he was a member of Team OHL as part of the CHL Canada Russia Series.

The 5’11”, 183lb. winger is coming off a 67-point season before being selected in the third round of the 2015 NHL Entry Draft by the New Jersey Devils.

Colton White, Tim Gettinger and Zach Senyshyn will continue to serve as alternate captains for the club.
