5 OHL players win WU18 Bronze with Canada
Sunday April 26, 2015
ZUG, Switzerland – For the third time in the last four years, Canada has won bronze at the World Under-18 Hockey Championships.
Glenn Gawdin (Swift Current Broncos) scored twice while goaltender Zach Sawchenko (Moose Jaw Warriors) made 28 saves as Canada defeated host Switzerland 5-2 to claim bronze.
Canada opened up a 3-0 lead in the first 12 minutes of the first period as even strength goals from Gawdin, Jansen Harkins (Prince George Cougars) and Deven Sideroff (Kamloops Blazers) put them ahead early.
Switzerland would respond in the latter half of the first as Damien Riat and Marco Miranda responded just 1:25 apart to send Switzerland into the second period trailing by just one.
Gawdin and Brett Howden (Moose Jaw Warriors) would re-establish Canada’s two goal cushion in the second frame as they led 5-2 on the scoreboard and controlled the shot clock 27-16 headed into the third.
Canada’s penalty kill would go to work in the opening half of the third as three consecutive minors forced Sawchenko into some key saves to preserve the three goal lead.
Switzerland outshot Canada 14-5 in the third but weren’t able to draw any closer on the scoreboard as Canada took a 5-2 decision.
It is Canada’s fourth straight medal at the world championship; it won bronze in 2012 and 2014, and gold in 2013. It is also Canada’s seventh medal all-time at the IIHF Ice Hockey World U18 Championship, having won three gold medals (2003, 2008, 2013), one silver (2005) and three bronze (2012, 2014, 2015).
Mathew Barzal (Seattle Thunderbirds), Mitchell Stephens (Saginaw Spirit), and Jeremy Roy (Sherbrooke Phoenix) were named Canada’s top three players of the tournament.
In Sunday’s gold medal game, goaltender Evan Sarthou of the Tri-City Americans made 19 saves to backstop Team USA to a 2-1 overtime victory over Finland. Petrus Palmu of the Owen Sound Attack collected a silver medal with three points in seven games.
