Attack push Rogers Championship Series to Game 7
The Owen Sound Attack needed a home ice win on Thursday to keep their hopes of winning the Robertson Cup alive. They got it and have forced a Game 7 showdown with the Mississauga St. Michael’s Majors to determine the OHL championship.
Garrett Wilson, Joey Hishon and Geoffrey Schemitsch all scored and Jordan Binnington made 41 saves in his first start in more than a month to back the Attack to a 3-2 win that evened the series at three games each.
The Attack dropped the first two games of the series but rebounded with a pair of overtime wins to even things up. A 7-3 loss in Mississauga on Tuesday pushed them to just one loss away from losing the series.
The Majors jumped out to a one goal lead in Game 6 when Maxim Kitsyn scored a powerplay marker in the first period. Wilson and Hishon responded in the second to put the Attack ahead and then Schemitsch added a powerplay marker in the third period.
“We didn’t get the start we wanted in the first period,” Owen Sound coach Mark Reeds said. “We were back on our heels a little bit.
“The home crowd has been very good to us this year and we felt that we owed them something. We talked about that a little bit and came out with a better effort in the second.”
Devante Smith-Pelly scored his 15th goal of the playoffs with just over a minute to go in the game but the Attack held on for the win.
“I thought we had a great start and got the lead on the powerplay but I thought that from the half way mark of the second period, Owen Sound won every battle,” Majors’ GM/coach Dave Cameron said. “They took it to us. I thought the other five games we’d played well enough to win but tonight we didn’t.”
Game 7 is on Sunday (2:00 p.m. on Rogers TV).
“Clearly it’s going to be a big test,” said Majors’ defenceman Marc Cantin, who helped the Windsor Spitfires win the Robertson Cup last year.
“We had a big chance tonight but didn’t capitalize on the opportunity. It’s going to be a good game on Sunday, We have home ice advantage which we’re lucky to have. Hopefully we can overcome some adversity here.”
