Wolves sign Kings prospect Jan Chovan
(Greater Sudbury, ON) – The Sudbury Wolves are excited to announce that Los Angeles Kings prospect Jan Chovan, a 2024 first round CHL Import Draft selection, has signed with the club.
“We are really excited to add a player with Jan’s skills and size to our hockey club”, said Rob Papineau, Vice President and General Manager of the Sudbury Wolves. “We drafted Jan last year knowing it may take a season to get to this point. He is another big skilled Slovak forward that thinks the game at a very high level. He was a leader for his country at the recent World U18 Championship, leading his team with eight points in seven games played.”
Chovan is a 6-foot-3, 190-pound left-handed forward from Bratislava, Slovakia. Chovan spent the 2024/25 season at club level with Tappara U20 in Finland, where he served as an assistant captain despite being a 17-year-old. Chovan was selected for Slovakia’s World Junior Championship roster, scoring a game-winning goal against Switzerland in the preliminary round. He was Los Angeles’ sixth round pick this past weekend.
After an IIHF World U18 Championship where Chovan recorded five goals and three assists in seven games, helping lead Slovakia to the bronze medal game, he was selected 184th overall by the Los Angeles Kings in the 2025 NHL Draft this past weekend.
“We are excited that he was drafted by Los Angeles this weekend and look forward to working with Jan to help him reach his ultimate goal of playing for the Kings in the next few years”, continued Rob Papineau.
“I am really excited to join the Wolves family”, expressed Jan Chovan. “I am ready to work hard every game and every shift to help be a championship team in Sudbury. I look forward to meeting the coaches and my teammates and the fans in Sudbury. Go Wolves!”
Chovan has OHL roots. His father, also named Jan, was a goaltender for the Belleville Bulls and London Knights from 2000-02 and was chosen by the Toronto Maple Leafs in the seventh round of the 2001 NHL Draft.
The 2025 CHL Import Draft starts at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, July 2nd. As part of a new policy adopted for the 2025/26 season, CHL clubs will now be permitted to carry up to three import players on their rosters.
