Wednesday Highlights: Flint takes I-75 Cup
Wednesday March 3, 2016
Detroit Red Wings prospect Vili Saarijarvi found defence partner Mathieu Henderson creeping in off the point 37 seconds into overtime as the 19-year-old beat Saginaw’s Evan Cormier to complete the comeback in a 6-5 Flint Firebirds victory over the visiting Saginaw Spirit.
The Firebirds overcame a 5-3 deficit to come back and win, capturing the inaugural I-75 Divide Cup title with their fifth win in eight meetings against the Spirit this season.
Flint went 3-for-4 on the powerplay as Saarijarvi finished the night with three assists while Henderson and Will Bitten each scored and added a pair of helpers. Ryan Moore, Zack Pittman and Nicholas Caamano each finished the night with a goal and an assist.
The Spirit picked up a point in the loss to carry a nine point lead over Flint into the weekend. Mitchell Stephens (1-1–2), Markus Niemelainen (0-2–2) and Artem Artemov (0-2–2) each had multi-point efforts.
The I-75 rivalry between Flint and Saginaw stretches back into the 70’s when the Generals and Gears battled it out in the IHL. If Wednesday is any indication, it appears that rivalry remains alive and well today.
