Veterans on the move as overage deadline comes and goes
Thursday’s overage trade deadline in the OHL featured some big names going to new destinations, landing in a new city to complete their OHL careers.
Here’s a look at Thursday’s moves involving overage players (OHL Media Notes with full details):
Frontenacs acquire Schenkel, send Lalonde and picks to Greyhounds
For those that tracked last year’s playoffs, Charlie Schenkel was very good for the Soo Greyhounds. Interestingly, he and Nolan Lalonde, who went head-to-head in last year’s Western Conference Semi-Final, are changing teams in a deal announced Thursday. The Frontenacs acquired Schenkel in exchange for Lalonde and three draft picks.
Schenkel has been sturdy for the Greyhounds in 2024-25, going 9-11 with a 2.89 goals-against average and .911 save percentage with two shutouts. He trades places with Lalonde, a Columbus Blue Jackets prospect who hoisted the Memorial Cup last June, who is 9-7-4-0 with a 3.25 goals-against average and .884 save percentage in 21 games with Kingston.
Storm trade Budnick to Brantford in exchange for picks
The Brantford Bulldogs acquired a rugged defender in the mould of Daniil Sobolev, who was a big piece on their blueline last season. Tommy Budnick fetched a pair of draft picks for the Guelph Storm in the form of third and fifth round selections. Budnick, who started his OHL career with the Kingston Frontenacs, is a good shot blocker and penalty killer, but has added an offensive dimension to his game with 13 points (3-10–13) over 17 games with the Storm in 2024-25.
Stonehouse dealt to Peterborough
The Peterborough Petes got used to Brady Stonehouse agitating them over the past several seasons but now the Edmonton Oilers prospect will be in maroon and white. The Petes picked-up the competitive winger in exchange for fourth and sixth round picks on Thursday. Stonehouse, from Blenheim, Ont., put up 10 points (5-5–10) over 18 games with Ottawa in his fourth season. The former second round pick in 2020 has 80 goals over 218 career OHL contests.
The Petes released overage winger Ryder McIntyre following the deal while Ottawa rounds out the season with overagers Collin MacKenzie, Will Gerrior and Matthew Mayich.
