U SPORTS Report: Oct. 31, 2024
A total of 195 OHL alumni are playing in the U SPORTS men’s hockey ranks this season. Throughout the year the U SPORTS Report will keep tabs on former OHL names doing great things in the OUA, AUS and Canada West ranks on the road to the 2025 U SPORTS University Cup to be held from March 20-23 in Ottawa, Ont.
X-MEN HAND UNB FIRST LOSS IN 57 GAMES
The StFX X-Men achieved a historic 4-3 overtime victory against the University of New Brunswick Reds on Friday, ending UNB’s 57-game winning streak as reigning U SPORTS champions. Ryan Struthers (Niagara, Mississauga, Windsor) and Alex Christopoulos (Saginaw, North Bay, Windsor) made key scoring contributions for StFX. UNB’s Emmett Sproule (Erie, Peterborough) and Cole MacKay (Soo) found the back of the net, but StFX secured the win in the extra frame.

WESTERN ATOP OUA WEST
The Western University Mustangs claimed the top spot in the OUA West this weekend, defeating Nipissing in back-to-back games. On Friday, they secured a 5-3 win over the Lakers with goals from Jack York (Kitchener, Barrie, Peterborough), Shane Bulitka (Sudbury, North Bay), and Andrew Bruder (Niagara). The Mustangs returned on Saturday to complete the weekend sweep with a 3-1 victory, as Bruder scored again, and Jake Gravelle (Mississauga, Hamilton) and Lawson Sherk (Hamilton/Brantford) each contributed an assist.

TMU TAKES OVER THUNDER BAY
The TMU Bold had a successful four-point weekend in Thunder Bay, defeating Lakehead in back-to-back games. In Friday’s 5-2 victory, Ian Martin (Niagara, Kingston) scored twice, with Jackson Doherty (Owen Sound, Niagara) also finding the net. The Bold secured another win on Saturday, 6-2, with goals from Martin and Joe Rupoli (Oshawa, Kitchener, Windsor). Will Portokalis (Mississauga, Owen Sound) and Jordan D’Intino (Soo) had standout showings, contributing three assists each.

ACADIA EARNS TWO-WIN WEEK
The Acadia Axemen had a successful week, starting with a high-scoring 6-5 win on Wednesday, with goals from Brendan Sellan (Erie) and Adam McMaster (North Bay, Owen Sound). Acadia wrapped up the weekend with a 4-2 victory over UPEI on Saturday, highlighted by a pair of goals from Sellan.
It's a final in Wolfville, as the Acadia Axemen have defeated the UPEI Panthers 4-2!

GAELS BUILD ON WINNING WAYS
The Queen’s University Gaels extended their strong start to the season, improving to 7-1 with two wins over the weekend during their road trip to Ottawa. In Friday’s 5-2 victory over Carleton, Cameron Tolnai (Ottawa) scored, and Ethan Larmand (Sudbury) added two assists. The Gaels followed up with a 4-2 win over the Ottawa Gee-Gees on Saturday, with Nolan Hutcheson (Sudbury) scoring twice and Michael Renwick (Hamilton, Windsor) also adding a goal.
