U SPORTS Report: Oct. 24, 2024
A total of 195 OHL alumni are playing in the U SPORTS men’s hockey ranks this season. Throughout the year the U SPORTS Report will keep tabs on former OHL names doing great things in the OUA, AUS and Canada West ranks on the road to the 2025 U SPORTS University Cup to be held from March 20-23 in Ottawa, Ont.
UNB REDS REMAIN LAST UNDEFEATED U SPORTS TEAM
The University of New Brunswick Reds remain the last undefeated team in the U SPORTS ranks, playing to a 6-0 record on the season. Blanking Acadia 5-0 on Friday, the shutout victory saw scoring contributions from Cole MacKay (Soo) and Emmett Sproule (Erie, Peterborough), while Justin Nolet (Sarnia, Kitchener) and Mike Petizian (Kitchener) each contributed an assist.
The Reds returned to action on Saturday, defeating Saint Mary’s 3-1 as Cole MacKay (Soo) and Sean McGurn (London) each found the back of the net.

GRYPHONS SHUT DOWN WATERLOO
The Guelph University Gryphons faced the Waterloo Warriors in back-to-back matchups over the weekend, emerging with two dominant wins. Clinching a 5-2 victory on Friday, the Gryphons received scoring contributions from Griffin Wilson (Owen Sound) and Nolan Dann (Flint, Niagara, Sarnia), with Luke Bignell (Barrie) adding two assists. Guelph secured a perfect weekend by defeating Waterloo again on Saturday, as Giordano Biondi (Sudbury, Hamilton) recorded a two-point night in a 4-3 win.
UPEI SECURES TWO-WIN WEEKEND
The UPEI Panthers secured their first wins of the season with a two-win weekend. In a 5-4 victory over the StFX X-Men on Friday, Josh Currie (North Bay, Windsor, Kingston) and Kaleb Pearson (Owen Sound) netted crucial goals, while Ben McFarlane (Guelph) scored twice. Noah Sedore (Erie) was a standout, contributing three assists to the win.

The Panthers returned to the rink on Saturday, defeating Dalhousie 6-1. McFarlane contributed a goal and an assist, Pearson added a goal and two assists, while Currie netted two more goals to secure the win. McFarlane’s standout performance over the weekend earned him UPEI Player of the Week honors.

OTTAWA CLINCHES SUCCESSFUL WEEKEND
The Ottawa Gee-Gees enjoyed a successful weekend, winning back-to-back games. In a 5-1 victory over McGill, rookie Zach Giroux (Flint, Sudbury) tallied a goal and an assist. Ottawa followed up with a 2-1 win against UQTR on Saturday, with Jacob LeGuerrier (Soo) and Giroux each contributing an assist.
