U SPORTS Report: Nov. 8, 2023
A total of 228 OHL alumni are playing in the U SPORTS men’s hockey ranks this season. Throughout the year the U SPORTS Report will keep tabs on former OHL names doing great things in the OUA, AUS and Canada West ranks on the road to the 2024 U SPORTS University Cup to be held from March 14-17 in Toronto, Ont.

The University of New Brunswick Reds remain atop the U SPORTS Rankings for the fifth consecutive week as the only remaining undefeated team across the country. Improving to a 10-0 record, the Reds extended their winning streak with a two-win weekend over Moncton and UPEI last week. Friday night’s action saw a pair of goals from Ottawa 67’s graduate Austen Keating, along with contributions from Hamilton Bulldogs alumnus Kade Landry, former Saginaw Spirit forward Brady Gilmour, and London Knights graduate Jason Willms as the Reds defeated the Moncton Aigle Bleus 4-3 in overtime.

The Reds were back on the ice on Saturday, blanking the UPEI Panthers 8-0 to close out the weekend. Former London Knights forward Sean McGurn led UNB with a pair of markers, while Soo Greyhounds alumnus Cole MacKay was also a big contributor, tallying a pair of helpers for the win.
U OF T TAKES OVER WATERLOO
The University of Toronto Varsity Blues took over the Waterloo region over the weekend, clinching back-to-back wins over the Laurier Golden Hawks and Waterloo Warriors. Former Windsor Spitfires forward Cole Purboo opened the scoring for the Blues on Friday, while Saginaw Spirit graduate Nick Wong contributed an assist. Purboo would prevail as the game hero, scoring the shootout winner as Toronto defeated Laurier 3-2. The Blues headed over to the University of Waterloo on Saturday, defeating the Warriors in a high intensity 5-4 affair. The win saw goals from Purboo and Wong, while North Bay Battalion graduate Nick Grima, Kitchener Rangers alumnus Graham Dickerson, and former Mississauga Steelheads blueliner Hayden Davis each contributed helpers.

STORM ALUMNUS ROACH RECORDS PERFECT WEEKEND
The Brock Badgers continue to rise in the U SPORTS Rankings as they clinched a two win weekend over Windsor and Ontario Tech last week. Friday night’s win over the Lancers saw a goal from former Kingston Frontenacs forward Tyler Burnie, while Hamilton Bulldogs graduate Ethan Sims and Guelph Storm alumnus Jacob Roach each contributed an assist to the 3-1 victory. The Badgers were back in action on Saturday as Storm’s Roach had a standout four-point performance, registering a hat trick, including a penalty shot, as well as an assist in Brock’s 7-3 win over the Ontario Tech Ridgebacks to close out their perfect weekend.

TMU AND YORK FACE OFF IN THE “BOLLERS BALL”
The Toronto Metropolitan Bold had an exciting weekend, as TMU top-scorer Kyle Bollers faced off against a familiar face behind the bench, York Lions Assistant Coach Cyril Bollers. Earning the Bold’s sole weekend win, the Oshawa Generals graduate registered a goal and an assist to help lead TMU to a 5-2 victory over his father. Nicknamed the “Bollers Ball” by both teams, various OHL alumni contributed to the win as Kitchener Rangers graduate Cole Cameron netted a goal and an assist, while former Kingston Frontenacs forward Ian Martin tallied a goal and a pair of helpers.
