U SPORTS Report: Nov. 22, 2023
A total of 228 OHL alumni are playing in the U SPORTS men’s hockey ranks this season. Throughout the year the U SPORTS Report will keep tabs on former OHL names doing great things in the OUA, AUS and Canada West ranks on the road to the 2024 U SPORTS University Cup to be held from March 14-17 in Toronto, Ont.
BATTLE OF LIMESTONE CITY
The Queen’s University Gaels faced off against their cross-town rival RMC in back to back games last week, earning two wins for second place in the OUA East. The Gaels opened up their weekend with a 5-1 win on Wednesday, as Kitchener Rangers alumnus Jonathan Yantsis registered a four point game with a pair of goals and assists, while Erie Otters graduate Jack Duff also contributed a goal to the win. Both teams returned to action on Friday, as Queen’s closed out their perfect week with an 8-3 win thanks to contributions from Yantsis, Duff, Sudbury Wolves alumnus Nolan Hutcheson, Flint Firebirds graduate Owen Lalonde, and former Erie Otters forward Hayden Fowler. Gaels forward and Saginaw Spirit grad Dalton Duhart is the current OUA men’s hockey scoring leader with 32 points (13-19–32) in 14 games.

RANGER BACKSTOPS UPEI TO CONSECUTIVE WINS
Former Mississauga Steelheads and Sudbury Wolves goaltender Joe Ranger was sharp for the UPEI Panthers last week, making 27 saves in Saturday’s 5-3 road win over the Dalhousie Tigers. Kaleb Pearson (Owen Sound Attack), Ben McFarlane (Guelph Storm) and Elias Cohen (Erie Otters) contributed Panthers goals in the victory. Ranger turned in a 28-save shutout on Tuesday as UPEI blanked Moncton 7-0, improving to 6-9-0-0 on the season. Daylon Groulx (Owen Sound/Ottawa) potted a pair while Cohen racked up a goal and three assists.

UNB RECEIVES RINGS
Ranked first for the seventh consecutive week as the only undefeated team in the country, the University of New Brunswick Reds received their 2022-23 U SPORTS championship rings over the weekend, celebrating the program’s ninth national title.

The Reds closed out another perfect weekend last week, defeating the Acadia Axemen on Friday thanks to a hat trick from former Peterborough Petes and Erie Otters forward Emmett Sproule, followed by a 5-4 win over the Saint Mary’s Huskies on Saturday. UNB forward and Ottawa 67’s grad Austen Keating currently leads the AUS in scoring with 23 points (9-14–23) in 14 games.
TMU TURNS DOWN THE CAPITAL
Toronto Metropolitan University’s men’s hockey program shut down their visitors from the nation’s capital over the weekend, earning four points as the Bold defeated the Carleton Ravens and Ottawa GeeGees. The Bold blanked the GeeGees on Thursday as Oshawa Generals graduate Kyle Bollers found the back of the net in the 2-0 win. TMU returned to action on Friday, clinching a third period victory as Owen Sound Attack alumnus William Portokalis and former Mississauga Steelheads blueliner Ryan Wells each contributed a goal as the Bold defeated the Ravens 5-3.
