U SPORTS Report: Mar. 19, 2025
A total of 195 OHL alumni are playing in the U SPORTS men’s hockey ranks this season. Throughout the year the U SPORTS Report will keep tabs on former OHL names doing great things in the OUA, AUS and Canada West ranks on the road to the 2025 U SPORTS University Cup to be held from March 20-23 in Ottawa, Ont.
50 OHL ALUMNI COMPETING AT 2025 U CUP
Fifty OHL alumni are set to compete at the 2025 U CUP, which begins Thursday in Ottawa. Players from Toronto Metropolitan University, Mount Royal University, the University of New Brunswick, the University of Ottawa, the University of Moncton, Concordia University, the University of Saskatchewan, and Queen’s University will battle for the U SPORTS championship. The reigning national champion UNB Reds are aiming for their third consecutive title, while several teams are in pursuit of their first national crown.

MCKAY AND ONUSKA EARN MAJOR U SPORTS AWARDS
Matt Onuska of the University of Waterloo men’s hockey program has been named U SPORTS Goaltender of the Year for the 2024-25 season. Appearing in 19 games with the Warriors this season, Onuska posted a 10-9 record, a 2.18 goals-against average, and a league-best .941 save percentage in his second U SPORTS season. Originally selected by the Kingston Frontenacs in the seventh round (133rd overall) of the 2017 OHL Priority Selection, Onuska played three OHL seasons with the London Knights and Windsor Spitfires, recording a 37-17-5-1 record, a 3.89 goals-against average, and a .875 save percentage. The Waterloo, Ont., native also backstopped the Spitfires to the 2022 OHL Championship Series with a 12-6-2-0 playoff record that season.

Cole MacKay of the University of New Brunswick is the recipient of the Dr. Randy Gregg Award for student-athlete community service for the 2024-25 U SPORTS season. MacKay is an ambassador for Hockey Gives Blood and the co-founder of Upfront Sports, a high-performance hockey academy dedicated to developing the next generation of players. This season, he also led his team’s involvement in Shoot for the Cure, helping raise over $2,000 for cancer research. Drafted in the fifth round (97th overall) by the Soo Greyhounds in the 2017 OHL Priority Selection, the hometown native played four seasons with the Hounds, registering 85 goals, 116 assists and 201 points over 232 regular season contests.

FIVE OHL OFFICIALS TO OFFICIATE U CUP
Five OHL officials have been selected to officiate the 2025 U SPORTS University Cup. Referees Tyson Stewart and Brendan Kane, along with linespersons Spencer Knox, Pierre-Luc Lurette and Shawn Oliver, have earned the opportunity to work this national event. The OHL congratulates them on this well-deserved achievement and wishes them the best as they officiate some of the top university hockey talent in the country.
