Sunday Highlights: Vande Sompel strikes late in Generals win

 

OSHAWA 4 BARRIE 2
New York Islanders prospect Mitchell Vande Sompel (1, 2) scored a pair of goals and recorded eight shots on goal as the Oshawa Generals doubled up the Barrie Colts 4-2 on home ice. Vande Sompel scored third period goals just over one minute apart to break a 2-2 tie and help the Generals improve to 3-4 on the season. Jason Willms (1) opened the scoring for Barrie with his first OHL goal before Serron Noel (1) followed suit for Oshawa and Alex Di Carlo (1) scored his first as a General before the first period expired. Down 2-1, Barrie’s Adrian Carbonara (2) knotted the score at two midway through the second period. Vande Sompel’s two goals both included assists from Tampa Bay Lightning prospect Anthony Cirelli. Oshawa’s penalty kill held Barrie to an 0-for-10 mark on the power play. Jeremy Brodeur turned aside 27 shots in goal for Oshawa.

WINDSOR 5 LONDON 4 OT
Jalen Chatfield (1) scored with 56 seconds remaining in overtime to give the Windsor Spitfires a 5-4 win over visiting London. The back-and-forth battle saw the Spits open the scoring on early power play goals from Gabriel Vilardi (3, 4) and Jeremiah Addison (3). The Knights would quickly respond as Robert Thomas (2) and Max Jones (1) knotted the score at two with goals one minute apart. Cristiano DiGiacinto (2) reinstated the Windsor lead before the first expired as they held a 3-2 edge into the intermission. Cliff Pu (3) took an Olli Juolevi feed to bring London back even 3-3 at 10:28 of the second, but the Spits came back on Vilardi’s second of the afternoon on the power play at 12:27. Janne Kuokkanen (2) leveled the score at four before the second period expired and that’s how the game would stay until the end of regulation. Chatfield would beat Tyler Parsons with a high shot from down the left wing and push the Spits to 6-2 on the season. The Spitfires went 3-for-6 on the power play as Ottawa Senators prospect Logan Brown recorded four assists in the win.

OTTAWA 5 KINGSTON 4 OT
Patrick White (1) scored 3:03 into overtime to give the Ottawa 67’s a 5-4 overtime win in Kingston. Artur Tyanulin assisted on the overtime winner with one of his three helpers on the afternoon to go along with his third goal of the season. Austen Keating (3, 4) scored a pair of goals for Ottawa while Sasha Chmelevski (4) also tallied. Kingston rookie Nathan Dunkley (2) helped the Frontenacs earn a point, tying the game with 2:48 left in the third period to force overtime. Jason Robertson (3), Ted Nichol (3) and Stephen Desrocher (1) also scored for Kingston. Ottawa went 3-for-6 on the power play, with White’s overtime winner coming on the man advantage as he one-timed a Tyanulin centering feed past an outstretched Jeremy Helvig. Ottawa improves to 3-4-1-0 as goaltender Leo Lazarev made 35 saves in the victory.

OWEN SOUND 6 SAULT STE. MARIE 1
The Owen Sound Attack closed out their northern road trip with a bang on Sunday as Petrus Palmu (4, 5, 6) recorded a hat-trick and Aidan Dudas (1, 2) scored the first two goals of his OHL career in a 6-1 win. Nick Suzuki (3) also scored for the bears while goaltender Michael McNiven made 36 saves, playing a large role in holding Sault Ste. Marie to 1-for-8 on the power play. David Miller (6) ended McNiven’s shutout bid with 5:20 left in the third. Nick Suzuki finished the afternoon with a goal and two assists as the Attack put a Friday night loss in their rear view mirror.

NIAGARA 5 SUDBURY 4 OT
The Niagara IceDogs let a 4-0 lead slip away, but rookie Akil Thomas’ (2) penalty shot winner 3:27 into overtime redeemed the Dogs on the road in Sudbury as they took it 5-4. Chris Paquette (2), Johnny Corneil (2), Kyle Langdon (3) and Ondrej Machala (1) opened the scoring for Niagara as the IceDogs carried a 4-0 lead after 20 minutes. Macauley Carson (5), Dmitry Sokolov (1), Kyle Capobianco (3) and Reagan O’Grady (3) chipped away at the Niagara lead throughout the second period, eventually knotting the score at four after 40. Regulation solved nothing, eventually giving way to Thomas’ thrilling winner as the IceDogs improve to 3-3 on the year. Sudbury took the shooting column 43-36 as Niagara’s Stephen Dhillon made 39 saves on the afternoon. IceDogs rookie Ondrej Machala earned third star honours, recording two assists to go with his first OHL goal.
