Sunday Highlights: Petes prevail in Merkley’s productive debut

 

PETERBOROUGH 6, OTTAWA 3
San Jose Sharks prospect Ryan Merkley had three assists in his Peterborough Petes debut, steering them to a 6-3 home ice win over the first place Ottawa 67’s. The Petes charged out to a 4-0 lead on a pair of goals from Liam Kirk (10, 11) joined by one from Nick Robertson (11) and the first of two off the stick of Adam Timleck (11, 12). Ottawa brought things back within a goal though as Jack Quinn (6, 7) joined Tye Felhaber (38) in finding the back of the net. Timleck struck on the power play with 1:43 left in the second period before rookie Cameron Butler (8) put things out of reach in the third. Hunter Jones turned aside 33 shots for the win, improving to 18-12-0-0. Ottawa outshot Peterborough 36-21 but went 0-for-7 on the power play to Peterborough’s 2-for-5 mark. Ottawa’s second straight loss sees the 67’s go into the break with a 25-6-3-1 record. Peterborough wins for the seventh time in the past 10 games, improving to 19-14-0-0 for third in the East Division.

WINDSOR 4, SAGINAW 3 – OT
Tyler Angle (8) tied the score with 1:30 remaining in regulation before setting Daniel D’Amico (13) up for the game winner 3:29 into overtime as the Windsor Spitfires ended a four-game drought, defeating visiting Saginaw 4-3. Vegas Golden Knights prospect Connor Corcoran (6) earned first star honours with a goal and assist while Will Cuylle (10) launched the teddy bears 7:52 into the second period. Kari Piiroinen made 33 saves for the win as the Spits were outshot 36-29. Bode Wild (9), Jake Goldowski (6) and Danny Katic (3) accounted for Saginaw goals while Albert Michnac had a pair of assists. Spirit rookie Tristan Lennox made 25 saves in the loss as the Spirit earned a single point, wrapping up the first half with a 18-11-2-2 record for second in the West Division. Windsor’s halt’s Saginaw’s winning streak at four games, improving to 15-16-2-1 for fourth in the West Division.

NORTH BAY 5, BARRIE 4
Justin Brazeau (31, 32, 33, 34) put the North Bay Battalion on his back, scoring four straight goals before Brad Chenier (15) scored the game winner with 5:26 left in the third period as the Troops defeated the visiting Barrie Colts 5-4. Brazeau’s first career four-goal game helped the Battalion end the first half with three straight wins as goaltender Christian Propp made 30 saves against his former club. Jack York (2) and Ben Hawerchuk (15) put Barrie up 2-0 in the opening half of the first period before Brazeau’s four-goal outburst put North Bay up by two. Ryan Suzuki (9) and Jason Willms (9) drew the score even in the latter half of the second period Chenier potted the winner on a deke to the backhand. The second of back-to-back wins over Barrie gives the Battalion wins in three of their four encounters with the Colts this season. North Bay enters the break with a record of 14-18-1-1 while Barrie has lost three straight and sits one point ahead of the Battalion with a 15-17-1-0 record in the Central Division.

LONDON 5, ERIE 3
2019 NHL Draft prospect Connor McMichael (21, 22) was all over the scoresheet, leading the London Knights to a 5-3 win over the visiting Erie Otters with two goals and two assists. Nathan Dunkley (11), William Lochead (4) and Sahil Panwar (2) also scored for the Knights as they held off a late Erie surge to close out the first half with a Midwest Division-leading 23-5-2-1 record. Joseph Raaymakers kicked out 29 shots for the win as Erie goals came from Maxim Golod (5), Chad Yetman (13) and Gera Poddubnyi (18). Overage blueliner Matthew Timms had three assists for London while Erie’s Kyle Maksimovich had a pair of his club. The Otters hold a 13-19-1-0 record at the bottom of the Midwest Division.

GUELPH 8, OSHAWA 5
Overage winger Anthony Salinitri (19, 20, 21) finished with a hat-trick but it wouldn’t be enough as the Guelph Storm took an 8-5 road win in Oshawa behind two goals and two assists from Dallas Stars prospect Liam Hawel (16, 17). The high-scoring affair saw Guelph score eight times on 29 shots as Keegan Stevenson (11) joined Hawel with two goals while others came from newcomer Pavel Gogolev (8), Nate Schnarr (19), Owen Lalonde (3) and Alexey Toropchenko (7). Nico Daws made 38 saves for the win as the Storm was outshot 43-29. Serron Noel (20) and William Ennis (2) joined Salinitri in the goal-scoring department for Oshawa while Danil Antropov had a pair of assists. Oshawa carries consecutive losses into the break, sitting second in the East Division with a 20-12-2-0 record. Guelph wins a third straight, improving to 17-9-3-4 putting them tied for second in the Midwest Division.

MISSISSAUGA 3, SUDBURY 1
The Mississauga Steelheads halted the Sudbury Wolves’ winning streak at seven games as Michael Little (8), Alan Lyszczarczyk (13) and Ryan McLeod (11) all scored while blueliner Liam Ham picked up a pair of assists. Mississauga outshot Sudbury 41-20 and had a total of eight power play opportunities, improving to 16-14-3-0 for third in the Central Division. Sudbury’s lone goal came from the stick of Blake Murray (14) while Jake McGrath made 38 saves in the loss. The Wolves sit second in the Central Division with a 21-9-1-1 record.

FLINT 7, KINGSTON 1
The Flint Firebirds closed out the first half on a high note, ending a nine-game losing skid with a decisive 7-1 road win over the Kingston Frontenacs. The Firebirds, who dressed just 14 skaters for the contest, had two goals and an assist from both Jack Wismer (3) and Jake Durham (21, 22) while Ethan Keppen (9) had a goal and assist. Jacob Winterton (7) and Hunter Holmes (4) also scored for the Firebirds as they outshot Kingston 31-28 and went 3-for-6 on the power play. Anthony Aguanno’s (1) first OHL goal was the lone marker for Kingston. Emanuel Vella stopped 27 of 28 as the Firebirds wrap up the first half with a 4-29-2-0 record. Kingston falls to 10-23-1-0.
