Storm gain size, experience with addition of Miedema
The Guelph Storm got in on the overage player rush on Tuesday, acquiring 6-foot-4, 212Ib. left-winger Ethan Miedema from the Kingston Frontenacs in exchange for a 14th round pick in 2027 along with three conditional selections. Those include Brantford’s second round pick in 2026, Windsor’s fifth round pick in 2026 and Saginaw’s third round pick in 2027.
“Ethan is a proven veteran and leader who is capable of contributing in all areas for our team,” said Guelph Storm GM George Burnett. “He has shown a consistent ability to score in his four seasons in the OHL and is bringing over 40 games of playoff experience to our hockey club. We are excited to welcome Ethan and his family to the Storm organization.”
Originally selected fourth overall by the Windsor Spitfires in the 2021 OHL Priority Selection, Miedema joined the Frontenacs in January 2023 as the centrepiece of a trade that involved star centreman Shane Wright going to Windsor.
“I am beyond excited for the upcoming season,” said Miedema. “I am looking forward to meeting my new teammates and playing in front of a crowded Sleeman Centre.”
A 20-year-old from Cobourg, Ont., Miedema recorded career-highs with 23 goals, 34 assists and 57 points over 66 games in Kingston this past season. The former fourth round pick by the Buffalo Sabres in the 2023 NHL Draft has accrued 75 goals, 113 assists and 188 points in his 267-game OHL career. He’s appeared in 41 playoff contests, most notably winning a Western Conference title during his rookie season with the Spitfires.
Miedema joins fellow 2005-born veteran Charlie Paquette in Guelph as the Storm look to return to the OHL Playoffs next spring.
