Steelheads acquire Ducks prospect, former OHL champion Konnor Smith
The Brampton Steelheads beefed up their blueline on Wednesday morning, acquiring Owen Sound Attack captain Konnor Smith in exchange for seven draft selections including a pair of second round picks.
A 6-foot-6, 217Ib. Anaheim Ducks prospect from Windsor, Ont., Smith has been limited to eight games this season due to a wrist injury, recording eight points (4-4–8) after being named Attack captain to start the season. The 20-year-old has produced 20 goals, 32 assists and 52 points over 187 regular season games between Owen Sound and Peterborough.
“Moving your captain is not a very easy thing to do, but in this situation, I think it was necessary for Konnor to move forward and us to look to the future,” said Attack GM Dale DeGray. “Konnor is a fantastic young man and did everything he could in the time he was here. He was a tremendous leader and teammate. We would like to wish him well with the remainder of the season and in his pro career.”
Originally a ninth round pick by Peterborough in 2020, Smith won an OHL championship with the Petes in 2023, suiting up in 23 games during their playoff stretch. He was selected by the Anaheim Ducks in the fourth round (97th overall) of the 2023 NHL Draft following the title run.
Smith hasn’t played since Oct. 19th. His Steelheads are in action on Wednesday night in Ottawa before a Friday night visit to the Kitchener Rangers.
