Saturday Highlights: IceDogs get more great goaltending

The Niagara IceDogs got more great goaltending on Saturday, wrapping up a perfect 3-in-3 set as Stephen Dhillon made 29 saves in a 3-0 blanking of the Ottawa 67’s. Matthew Philip (7), Danial Singer (12) and Elijah Roberts (2) scored for Niagara as the IceDogs kept pace in the Central Division, improving to 16-9-3-2. Olivier Tremblay made 27 saves in the Ottawa net as the 67’s dropped their third straight decision, falling to 14-15-1-1 after being shutout for the fourth time this season. Dhillon now has wins in six straight starts.

BARRIE 5 – OSHAWA 0
The third time was a charm for the Barrie Colts as they blanked the visiting Oshawa Generals 5-0 in their third appearance of the season on Sportsnet’s CHL Saturday Showcase. The Colts galloped out of the gate, taking a 4-0 lead after 20 minutes as Alexey Lipanov (10, 11) and Jason Willms (16, 17) both scored twice. Kyle Heitzner (3) added a third period goal for Barrie while Leo Lazarev earned his 11th career shutout with a 17-save effort. Lipanov’s first of the game launched the teddy bears onto the ice just 3:04 into action. Top NHL Draft prospect Andrei Svechnikov had a pair of assists in his second game back from injury. Barrie outshot Oshawa 38-17 as Generals netminder Kyle Keyser came on in relief, turning aside 23 shots in his first action since Nov. 5th. The Colts improve to 17-9-2-1 and remain deadlocked with Niagara atop the Central Division. The Generals slip to 13-16-2-0.

HAMILTON 7 – SAGINAW 1
The Hamilton Bulldogs poured it on for seven goals, defeating the visiting Saginaw Spirit 7-1 as rookie sensation Arthur Kaliyev (11, 12) scored twice. Montreal Canadiens prospect Will Bitten (8) finished off a nice passing play 4:15 into action to bring the bears onto the ice. Nicholas Caamano (15), Marian Studenic (12), Matthew Strome (15) and Connor McMichael (1) also scored for the Bulldogs who outshot the Spirit 42-23. Brandon Saigeon had three assists while Ben Gleason and Isaac Nurse both had two as the Bulldogs took their second win over Saginaw in the past two weeks. Aidan Prueter (3) provided Saginaw’s lone goal as the Spirit fell to 14-11-3-0. Hamilton maintains the lead atop the East Division with a 17-7-3-3 record.

KINGSTON 3 – SUDBURY 2
Matt Hotchkiss (8, 9) scored twice while Jeremy Helvig made 36 saves as the Kingston Frontenacs edged the visiting Sudbury Wolves 3-2. Tyler Burnie (14) scored the game winner late in the second period as the Fronts improved to 10-2-2-1 on home ice this season, remaining within two points of first place Hamilton in the East Division. The Wolves outshot the Frontenacs 38-30 as Dmitry Sokolov (17, 18) provided both Sudbury goals in the loss. Newly acquired forward Kirill Nizhnikov had a pair of assists for Sudbury as the Wolves fell to 9-17-5-0 on the season.

SARNIA 3 – PETERBOROUGH 1
Peterborough’s Dylan Wells turned in a 48-save performance but it wouldn’t be enough as the Sarnia Sting took a 3-1 win on home ice thanks to goals from Sean Josling (10), Ryan McGregor (9) and Adam Ruzicka (20). The Sting outshot the Petes 51-26, improving to 24-6-2-0 with their seventh win in the past 10 games. Pavel Gogolev (9) scored for Peterborough as the Petes fell to 15-14-1-1. Sarnia’s Justin Fazio made 25 saves to get the win in goal.

OWEN SOUND 5 – FLINT 4
The Flint Firebirds made it interesting late, but the Owen Sound Attack managed to snap a six-game losing skid on a game winner from Matthew Struthers (8). The Attack saw a 4-1 lead evaporate as Jake Durham (5), C.J. Clarke (5) and Jacob Collins (2) scored in the opening 11 minutes of the third to tie the score at four. Struthers banged in a rebound coming down the middle with 6:41 left to go to give the Attack a 5-4 win on home ice. Maksim Sushko (16), Aidan Dudas (15), Daylon Groulx (5) and Jonah Gadjovich (15) scored other Owen Sound goals while veteran captain Jacob Friend had three assists. Owen Sound outshot Flint 34-25, going 2-for-2 on the power play. Maurizio Colella (10) provided Flint’s other goal as the Firebirds fell to 9-18-3-0. Owen Sound rebounds with a win, improving to 14-11-1-3 on the campaign.
